    Hi Guys,

    Thought I'd start another thread since this question is more technical.

    As I was removing the red QV intake for stripping/repainting, I heard that scary "tink-tink" metal-on-metal-as-if-something-fell sound. I carefully pulled the intake up and off the runners and noticed that some of the spacer sleeves were not where they should be around the bolts. FORTUNATELY the missing ones were sitting on top of the runners and all 8 are accounted for.

    My question to the experts is...

    is there anything else in the assembly I should look for that could've fallen? To recap, I have the intake itself, 8 metal spacers and 4 gaskets. I assume the scary sound was one of the spacers sliding down the bolt and resting on the runner. Hopefully.

    Yes, the spacers are what you need to be concerned about when removing the plunem and it appears you dodged a bullet.

    So, there's nothing else that can fall out? The exploded views of the assembly are too cluttered to tell what's in there.

    On a 2V, those 8 are the BIGGIES.

    And that is all there is.

    Nothing else really.

    I wonder if it is more easy to leave plenum in place and remove the complet front and rear intake manifolds in one time. So plenum can be taken of afterwards with lesser risk loosing parts inside the engine.

    I know some people that have done exactly that. Easier to remove the combined assembly, not so much.

    If you heard something, I would be very careful. While it may not be one of the spacers it may well be some other foreign object. I would look down into each intake runner and in each spark plug hole (in case the valve was open and see what you can find) with a bore-scope type device. Also, look around the intake and see if you can identify what made the noise. Maybe something fell but not down an intake?

    Probably about the same level of pain and risk. I think this is one of those "pick your poison" things....

    Thanks. Good idea to fire up the boroscope. Pretty sure the noise I heard was three of the spacers sliding down the threads and hitting the top of the runners at slightly offset times. I already accounted for all the nuts and washers and the intake itself covered the runners...so chances are slim something fell in. But I totally agree - better safe than sorry!

    I've only done this once, but from what I learned, I'd say the safest way is to:
    - remove all connections from intake and throttle body
    - remove the large throttle body air supply hose (requires some wrangling and pulling directly backwards)
    - remove the 4 nuts holding the throttle body to the intake
    - remove the throttle body
    - unbolt the intake (easier said than done. requires removing the rear deck lid, taking fuel lines off two or three injectors, being a contortionist).
    - lift the intake about 3/4 of an inch (keeping the bolts in the holes) and wrap tape around the 8 bolts to prevent the spacers from falling. If any have already dropped, theyll be resting on top of the runners. Lift them up so they can be taped/secured to the bolt
    - once all spacers are secured, gently raise and remove the intake.

    If I had to it again, that would be my approach. I'm making a video of this resto and should have it ready in a few weeks. HTH anyone else looking to do this.

    Removing the Plenum is pretty straightforward. Had mine off my old GTB QV in about 40 minutes. Didn’t remove Decklid or disconnect injector but did disconnect the linkage to the throttlebody and remove it . Just loosened the 10 mm nuts on the underside of the Plenum, giving myself enough space to slip pieces of construction paper between the Plenum and the holes in the manifold. Once they were in place removed all nuts and washers and lifted the Plenum out of the engine bay. The construction paper keeps any object from dropping into the intake.

    Then placed a little bearing grease on the Plenum to hold the spacers in place until it was set in position still leaving the cardboard

    Clearly, I should've asked this question before diving in ;). Not the first time I've paid the idiot tax. Fortunately, this time it wasn't painful. (I hope). You're lucky you didn't need to disconnect any injectors. No way to get a wrench in on mine without removing 3 of them. I guess removing the decklid is optional, though (on my car at least) it would've been a lot tougher to do in-place. Especially without bleeding. Great tip about the paper and grease. Thanks.

    Certainly didn’t mean to imply that you are somehow challenged. Haha! I think it’s great that you wrench on your own cars. I just happen to search through some old threads and read how they said to keep from dropping those spacers down the manifold. A couple of my forward injection lines made the process a little trying but not too bad. :)

    I freely embrace my challenges :). I also scoured a bunch of threads, but the google lottery unfortunately didn’t reward me with the card trick. Hopefully the video I’m making will help others more readily!
