Speaking of clay modelers, just came across this American Motors Pacer clay development photo. Before computer controlled milling machines became the 'thing' Image Unavailable, Please Login

My mother had a Pacer. I think it subconsciously inspired my like for squat designs like the CRX and Corrado.

Noted designer, Peter Stevens Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login has this to say about the design coming out of Germany these days:

What is happening to car design in Germany? Is it a total lack of taste, a lack of good management, an undercurrent of aggression, personal insecurity, or desperation to be different by following the same brutalism as everyone else? Or maybe they have run out of talent. The BMW X7 has some of the worst surface development ever inflicted on an automobile. Well, he's right. All those cars are unappealing.

That Mercedes looks cheap, like a rebadged Honda, Acura, or something along those lines. Not that Hondas and Acuras are horrible, it's just that you should get a more premium look than that when you pay Mercedes' prices.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Unless what you see is good looking cars... In which case I suggest talking to a specialist. One’s right here ;)

Either after a quick visit to the optician. ;)

Meanwhile looks like Ferrari will go the 911 evolutionary way with the 488’s replacement with just another facelift. Good idea? Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke?

With popup headlights. No, that wouldn't have helped either.

Remember that the Pacer was designed around the GM Wankel motor. Late in the development GM cancelled the motor so AMC had to fit their 6 cylinder in. Notice that with the pop-up headlights how much lower the hood is.

The straight rear view is by far the best view. It looks like a futuristic pod from the rear. The front looks like a generic car and does not tie in with the rear. I have never seen a 3 wheeler that had a "normal" car front end that looked good as a complete vehicle. The front needs to be designed as the front of a 3 wheeler instead of the front of a car. The car front makes it look goofy from any front views, as the body quickly tapers away, making the front seem too big for the size of the vehicle, IMO.
