    update....

Philip Morris unfazed by Ferrari sponsorship investigation in Australia

Ferrari sponsor Philip Morris International is adamant its Mission Winnow initiative fully complies with tobacco advertising laws, despite an investigation being launched in Australia over the matter.

Mission Winnow's sponsorship of Ferrari was launched at last year's Japanese Grand Prix, and represents a new scientific and technological push from Philip Morris in a bid to move its business away from reliance on tobacco products that had been made famous through its Marlboro brand.

But the shape of the logo has prompted accusations that it is similar to Marlboro's white-and-red chevron.

Australian media reported earlier this week that Australia's Department of Health and Victoria's Department of Health and Human Services were looking in to whether the Ferrari backing was in breach of tobacco advertising bans.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has also launched a separate investigation, after local television stations broadcast the 2018 Japanese Grand Prix with Mission Winnow on Ferrari's cars.

Philip Morris International Director of Global Communication Tommaso di Giovanni has told Autosport that he is confident his company fully complies with tobacco advertising laws - and says it is discussing the matter with Australian GP chiefs.

"The initiative and the symbols and logos used on the livery of the Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow and the website comply with the laws that apply to our activities in Australia and the State of Victoria," said di Giovanni.

He added: "We are aware of the debate on Mission Winnow in Australia and we are working with the organisers of the local grand prix to understand the concerns of the authorities and give them an answer.

"Mission Winnow does not advertise or promote our company's products or product brands. Rather, it is designed to talk about our commitment to improving ourselves in everything we do.

"Mission Winnow is a window to the new Philip Morris International and our partners, to our commitment and the stimuli that drive us to improve and evolve. And to contribute to the progress of society."

Not everyone is so happy with the Mission Winnow situation, and Melbourne surgeon and anti-smoking campaigner John Cunningham, who complained about the new branding to authorities, told The Age that he was clear about what was behind the situation.

"This website actually makes it much clearer what they are trying to achieve, and what sort of business they are in," Dr Cunningham said.

"It has nothing to do with F1 cars, that's for sure.

"Tobacco companies are finally admitting that their only means of financial survival is to get people addicted to nicotine, and they're going to pour money into researching how to do that most effectively — not for the benefit of their addicted customers, but for the benefit of their profits and shareholders."

One problem is that if Australia forces the removal of these particular sponsorship logos then other countries are likely to follow. PM is trying to remain a viable business by creating other sources of cash flow besides tobacco, and this Aussie seems to be condemning them for that. Silly. Perhaps Dr. Cunningham will be satisfied with the publicity he's already received.

My personal opinion is that any product that is legal should be permitted to advertise. If tobacco is so bad then just ban its sale and the advertising disappears.

Yep, that’s the trouble these days, nosey parkers that want to lead boring lives hate their choices so much, they try to make everyone else live the same way....... same as the pricks that try to put artificially low speed limits in place, encourage speed traps, make sneaky reports about people who overtake them, flash their lights in your rear view mirror when you overtake the slowpokes, and generally try to take away the fun of everything. They’ll be trying to ban sex out of marriage soon as it makes people smile too much! ****wits

Verstappen serves remainder of Interlagos punishment

Red Bull F1 driver Max Verstappen completed his Brazilian Grand Prix penalty by attending the FIA International Stewards Programme in Geneva on Saturday.

The programme has been running annually since 2017 and enables stewards from across various motorsport disciplines to gather and share their experiences.

Verstappen was handed a two-day public service penalty after shoving Esteban Ocon in parc ferme at Interlagos last year, which came in the wake of Verstappen being punted out of the lead by the lapped Ocon.

The Dutch driver carried out the first day of his sanction at last month’s Marrakesh Formula E round in January, observing the panel of stewards, which included ex-F1 racer Vitantonio Liuzzi.

Verstappen participated in a number of interactive case study sessions in Geneva, joining the competitors’ panel discussion alongside three-time World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx, M-Sport boss Richard Millener and BMW motorsport chief Jens Marquardt.

The case studies involved considering an incident, deliberating with stewards, and deciding an appropriate course of action.

“We are doing our job on the track, trying to get the best out of the race, and it’s clear that the stewards are doing their job to find the best way to reach a fair decision,” Verstappen said.

“It’s been a good lesson for me and I’ve learned a lot, both in my day in Marrakesh, which I really enjoyed and which gave me a good understanding of the stewards, and now here – I think it’s also good to be a part of this event.”

Over 200 representatives participated in seminars throughout the course of the three-day event.

    [AutoBild] Ferrari update

    also

According to a report from Automoto:

"Vettel’s team (excluding the engine engineers) have been assigned to Leclerc, while the people who worked with Kimi, are working with Vettel now."

Automoto also reports details of the new Ferrari car. During the crash test, Jo Bauer (FIA) was there, because for the first time Ferrari used materials other than the usual carbon. In fact the details were printed in 3D using something new for F1.

"This is a big step forward, a technical revolution that is invisible in Ferrari‘s work but very important. It could mean that during a GP weekend, if it shows that a piece needs some modifications or they have to make it new, it could even be created directly on the track!"

Once again, the FIA manage to undermine the work of those people who were invited to participate in an event by making attendance a punishment for Maxine.... they should not have bothered sanctioning him if they were going to make those sanctions so bloody stupid.... handbags in the garage punished by being flown to Geneva for a chat with world champions and expert engineers...... oh no, that must really hurt... Disagree. He, Max is now allowed to see the work he causes others and his ignorance of the rules as he drives around and being involved in events that are avoidable. I think he probably has seen a piece of a larger picture he affects and is part of.

Melbourne is gonna have another team to contend with regarding "tobacco" products advertising.

McLaren Racing announces a multi-yeal a global partnership with British American Tobacco (BAT), focused solely on BAT’s potentially reduced risk products and grounded in technology and innovation.

The multi-year partnership is centred on accelerating BAT’s transforming agenda, leveraging its portfolio of potentially reduced risk products, aiming to deliver the world’s tobacco and nicotine consumers a better tomorrow.

BAT are obviously following PM's lead. Both in terms of products and advertising policy.
This is intense competition for the "post cigarette" tobacco market where by tobacco sticks are heated and vaped.
Nicotine is released but not the tar and most of the harmful chemicals from actual combustion, they say.

In Japan for example the market is vast and BAT is I believe being litigated against by P.M for copying their tech.
Seeing that PM are arguably "getting away with it" in F1, BAT have decided to follow suit in their advertising policy too.

In America these new wave of products have not been licensed as the Surgeon General says they will encourage new people to get hooked.
Thus in the more health conscious West F1 can expect more questions like those raised by the Australians.

Personally I just miss the old logos, that WINNOW logo just offends from a graphics and semantics point of view.

My mind always sees it as the word winnow, ie the process of separating wheat from chaff.
That word is used in phrases such as "the over 60's population was winnowed by the detrimental effect of smoking on health"

Did nobody at PM's ad agency consider that ?

If that type of advertising is accepted in F1, they will pushed it in other areas.

Sponsorship is interesting to Tobacco companies because advertising costs are tax deductible.

If F1 endorses it, be prepared to see it everywhere soon.

The money is good for a race team. The source is not and this cannot be 'spun' in a positive way at all. Tobacco is toxic and so is the politics. Id like to see F1 move on but we all know good sponsors are hard to find for a series that has a major identity and future issue.

One thing for sure ..smoking is much more dangerous than driving an F1 car.So ok we get the Halo/Hans/ to protect the 20+ F1 drivers meanwhile the teams gleefully accept sponsorship from companies who have helped kill millions of people around the world.

Honda promises identical engines for Red Bull and Toro Rosso

The technical director of Honda in Formula 1, Toyoharu Tanabe, confirms that they will supply Red Bull and Toro Rosso with the same engine specifications for the 2019 season, so he discards using the Faenza team as 'guinea pig'.

The Sakura brand will be the official supplier of two teams in the coming season. This is the first time this has happened since they decided to return to the premier category of motorsport at the hands of McLaren, back in 2015.

They will be two teams 'brothers', and logic suggests that the Japanese could use Toro Rosso as a test bed to try to hit the key, but Tanabe rejects the idea and prefers to give both the same weapons.

"Yes, we will, it is the most logical method and the one that Honda considers to be the best, without mentioning that the regulations establish that we must supply all the equipment equally," comments Tanabe, in statements collected by the F1Today.net media. .

"But it's not just a case of supplying both teams with the same technical hardware, we'll also treat them equally in terms of the resources we allocate to manage our operations and on the development side . Two teams are part of the same family, "he adds.

Regarding the objectives with a view to the new season, from Honda no fixed goals are set, although they do want to improve the results obtained last year with the Italian team.

"Our goal is to achieve better results for both teams in 2018. For our partnership with Toro Rosso, that means finishing higher in the constructors' championship, scoring more points, being more reliable and maybe even repeating Bahrain's result of the year. past or doing better. "

"However, at this stage we can not know what to expect, because as in all sports, our result also depends on what our opponents can do," Tanabe concludes.

Williams cancels plans for early shakedown with new car

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Williams has abandoned plans to give its 2019 Formula 1 car a shakedown in Spain this weekend, because it is running late with its build plans.

The Grove-based outfit had been scheduled to use up one of its filming days to give its new FW42 a short run before the start of pre-season testing at Barcelona on Monday.

But with the outfit running behind its original schedule, it has elected to scrap the shakedown run so it can ensure it is fully ready for proper testing.

Deputy team principal Claire Williams said: "As anyone would expect, we have had an extremely aggressive engineering programme over the winter.

"As such, we have taken the decision not to run our car during our filming day this weekend in order to allow the team to maximise the time at the factory before we head to Barcelona for the first day of the test on February 18."

Williams is not the only team whose car build schedule is running late, with Renault admitting on Tuesday that it could also be forced to abandon a shakedown it hoped to do in Spain on Saturday.

Renault F1 managing director Cyril Abiteboul said: "Sometimes we are vocal about the late change of regulation and this is the harsh reality of that late change of regulations. I believe that we are not the only team to be in that situation."

EU: Ferrari and McLaren tobacco deals “require close examination”

The European Union’s Health, Food Safety and Energy Union department has confirmed to RaceFans that it is “closely examining” recent initiatives by the tobacco industry involving Formula 1 teams.

The comment follows an amendment to the FIA’s 2019 entry list, which reflects Ferrari’s entry as ‘Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow’, a reference to long-time backer Philip Morris International’s corporate initiative to offer healthier alternatives to smokers.

The team also confirmed that the red cars will carry Mission Winnow logos, a move that attracted the attention of Australian health authorities.

Earlier this week McLaren announced a partnership with British American Tobacco, with a BAT press release announcing the company’s “A Better Tomorrow” initiative under its “Transforming Tobacco” campaign.

According to the release the slogan will have “on-car and off-car presence”, and is expected to be revealed during Thursday’s McLaren MCL34 car launch.

A 2003 EU directive banned all forms of sponsorship by tobacco brands in member states, and was updated in 2014 to include electronic cigarettes and other emerging forms of tobacco consumption.

“The Commission continues to closely follow the implementation of the bans of sponsorship and advertising as foreseen by the Tobacco Advertising Directive, also in the context of Formula 1,” Anca Padurara, a spokesperson for the EU’s Health, Food Safety and Energy Union projects, told RaceFans in a statement.

“Recently, the Commission has been made aware of these recent initiatives by the tobacco industry. They will require further close examination following which the Commission will proceed as necessary.”

F1’s governing body banned tobacco sponsorship in the sport from the end of 2006, having imposed regulations based on prevailing EU laws and World Health Organisation guidelines.

A PMI spokesperson last week told RaceFans: “Let me reiterate that Mission Winnow is not, and will not, be used by [PMI] for any tobacco or nicotine containing products (link),” while BAT maintains that its message will “at all times [be] in line with applicable regulation and legislation”.
