LP400 is without doubt the most desirable but this review is all starry eyed and ignores all of the many issues of the Contach. The best thing about a Contach is the chassis, made by Dallara it is a work of art. Everything else is half baked and compromised for the sake of design.

Start with the fact that they never had 375hp - this is Italian BS, reality is 280 (look it up). They are noticeably slower than a Daytona (350hp) when you've driven both cars. The engines aren't "bullet proof", when you see one torn down the differences to a Ferrari are obvious, e.g. fewer and smaller diameter oilways. Side-draught carbs are a nightmare because they have to be removed every 10,000kms to do the valve clearances.

The single plate clutch has a very short life and it's an engine out to change it. If you've never had the experience of installing a Contach engine you don't know what pure frustration is. Even when installed, parts of the engine are jammed against chassis parts, e.g. the rear roll bar. It's just unfinished and sloppy engineering.

The front suspension is very crude - Lambo's tractor background comes to mind - many were converted to double wishbones of the later models because of tyre wear problems.

Then there's the driving. I note Harry's comment that the seat runners had been removed, so no adjustment but at least he could fit. The driving position is contorted and uncomfortable but far worse is the heat soak from the windscreen. On a 25 degree spring day you are soaked in sweat after 15 minutes. The A/C is of course completely unable to cope.

But I still wish I'd owned one!

    Ian spot on assessment.
I because I was in the wrong mind set, missed an early Diablo in 2013, and its seats were as bad as the LP400 and screwed up to the max and as such I could hardly fit.:(
Admitably they were only rebodied QV Countachs but I still wanted one after a day in 1994 with the Sandro Munari Targa Car , a Fing Monster

Does JD still have his LP400?

That was a less sought after LP400S, its been sold.

All Contach models had low production volumes (roughly 50 cars per series) because few people wanted them. Look how many Boxers and Testarossas Ferrari shifted in comparison - because they were usable cars.
