A solution in search of a problem...autonomous cars that is.

and what do google and apple know about anything to do with the transportation sector? neither's main source of revenue has anything to do with that sector, not even close, and apparently apple has backed off anyway and after years of 'research' google isn't making much of any meaningful progress..

(bonus, link above details some failures of the highly valued autonomous airplanes you write about, not autonomous at all)

other 'big ideas' that went flat:

Honestly, you can find anything pro or con about anything. You can argue guns are good and guns are bad. You can argue higher taxes are good or higher taxes are bad. And you can argue self driving cars are good or self driving cars are bad. Hell you can argue of a hot dog is a sandwich or not a sandwich. :)

But technology marches on. And as long as there are major groups out there investing in it, it will happen -- and sooner than you think. And when it does there will be many changes to society and laws and government revenue. And nothing will stop it short of some kind of emergency.

    I'm done! :)

I think you should really read this link, it's from yesterday and it clearly shows in an unbiased fashion state of the art for your proponents...

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2019/03/04/uber-lyft-ipo-waymo-driverless-vehicle-technology-ride-sharing-column/3014346002/

And, thanks, I think you were done a couple posts ago when stopped even mentioning what I was referring to.

The whole idea of autonomous cars is a fairy tale, it will never happen in the way you propose. It is impossible as I have shown and nothing will change that regardless of how much "will" there is for it to occur....

Not only that, but at least in the USA, we are self-governed, we elect persons to represent us and when that changes we elect someone else. And freedom is too highly valued to let the government control and approve our every move, I presume you would agree.

see you in 30 years for a big told-ya-so :)

    Ciao!

    Well let's agree to disagree

But if I told you 10 years ago that DVDs would go the way of the dodo bird in just 10 years from video streaming built right into a Smart Tv costing $500 when a 42 in Tv costed $3 grand, you would have said this is impossible.

Technology marches forward. People can either understand the changes coming or live in the past.

I'm sure some people still love their Sony BetaMax video recorder. Unfortunately there are no more Blockbuster stores to buy the tapes in....

...and eventually that will happen to the family car.

I'm sorry, I do not fit the above comments at all.

I know a lot more about technology than I care to go into here (immersed since 1978).

And in your above, choice is clear, people have a choice, and that's my point, your point is that choice will be blocked, unavailable, prohibited, illegal!

    reference your writings here:

    https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/posts/146486870/

    specifically;

And I said one more thing 5 years ago --- the car of today will become illegal to drive on city streets as it will be considered too dangerous or pollute too much. They will be allowed to driver "off road" or under special permit such as a parade or exhibition.

Can you tell me what (if any) previously legal methods of transport on city streets is/are now illegal/universally banned?

I do believe autonomous will one day be the norm. I make no prognostication on when.

I don't think they will ban self driving out right, what will happen is insurance companies will not insure cars that don't have auto drive or it will be probitively expensive if so...sports cars will still exist, but folks will use it only on special 'back roads' ala horse riding today and or there will.alwaya be a manual option...that most folks don't turn on in city driving from a liability perspective.

This is absolutely true. I always say 'Time solves all problems and answers just about every question.' Will autonomous cars take over? Time will definitely tell!

Reason 23 why autonomous cars will never be able to succeed:

    https://jalopnik.com/theres-something-very-weird-going-on-with-cars-gps-syst-1833138071

    <...> excerpt:

Also, there’s the fact that their systems can broadcast a simulated GPS signal in a range between 10 and 20 meters (30 and 60 feet) and the false GPS signal is being broadcast across the entire Geneva show.

Thomas admitted that the location is the default setting of their LabSat device, which suggests that it is one of their devices sending the signal. But, in order to cover as much area as the signal is covering, someone would have to deliberately amplify the signal, or connect the LabSat to a much larger antenna.

We reached out to one of the people in charge of security at the show, Philip Echivard, and he confirmed to me that he’d received complaints from Audi, Peugeot, Renault, Rolls-Royce, Volkswagen, Daimler-Benz, and BMW, and there are likely others.

He told me that the false GPS signal is “pissing off” the carmakers because it’s making their systems look bad and/or vulnerable.

Even when employees from the carmakers try to manually reset the GPS location and the date, the spoofed signals overwrite the manually-entered information, so that’s not an option.

Echivard also told me that because the signal is not “permanent” they are unable to triangulate its location.

Thomas is hoping that whoever is broadcasting this amplified false GPS signal will see an article like this one, realize what they’re doing, and stop. That’s assuming it’s unintentional.

    <...>

    from the comments:

This isn’t really new technology; it’s been around for a few years, anyway...the problem isn’t that the receivers themselves are being manipulated, it’s that someone’s jamming the actual GPS signal over the area and re-broadcasting a fake GPS signal in it’s place.

E.g., the manufacturer’s can’t stop this kind of attack; if you load up the GPS app on your phone, for instance, it’ll display the same thing.

Sounds like the drone issue at Gatwick..... some simpleton can fly a drone, or in this case, broadcast a simple signal, and the whole ****ing place closes down costing thousands, even millions in damages and lost production, and no one knows how to resolve it! I don’t want to own a car that can be fooled by a five year old with an iPhone and a bad hair day
