F8 Tributo launch references the 308

In the F8 launch email I just received from the local Ferrari dealer, they say:

The spoiler wraps around the tail lights, visually lowering the car’s centre of gravity and allowing a return to the classic twin light cluster and body-coloured tail, another signature of the early 8-cylinder berlinettas like the very first in the legendary series, the 1975 308 GTB.

It's a small thing, but shout outs to our cars is always welcome

 

as I wrote on the 488 section, the 308 is one of the best car design ever: Flavio Manzoni knows it and always looks to the 308 to find some inspiration in his design. I'm very happy that Ferrari called this car F8 Tributo, as it's clearly a 3X8 family tribute: the new car is very good looking and with a good balance between elegance and aggressivity, as 308 was.

I would love to retrofit those tail lights into my car.

 

Rear buttress of this car looks terrific. Kudos to Chevrolet for making the Corvette buttress look as though no money was allocated or motivation wasted, Seemingly for years.

 

Are those vents above the headlights?

 

It's a pity, that 3D-CAD styling tools displaced aesthetes made from flesh and blood.
But I'm fairly alone with this. I regularly visit 3D software presentations and most folks are highly impressed about such styling atrocities, they show us, except me.

I miss the italian Pininfarina-era. I say italian, because now it's 75% indian (remaining 25% will follow soon). That's neither what I want to have back.

But that they mention the 308 GTB in their press release is great. I doubt, that in 40 years anyone mentions 'F8 Tributo'.

it would have been better if the design change from the 488 was more liken that from the 308 to 328 the car looks the same other then from the rear i do like the double tail lights its really cool that this styling has returned with this model the front view photo makes the car look like it has a wing kind of like the F50

Although 3D Cad/CAM is part of the process the initial design phase remains the same as it always has been. Sketching and ideation.

Ferrari Design, like all major manufacturers, begin each project with traditional sketches and clay modeling by hand. It isn't until much later that concepts are surfaced in CAD. Even then, full size clay models are roughed in by CNC mills but the final surfacing is done by hand. The computer is part of the process but it really has zero effect on the designs we see today.

Love it or hate it, the design/style still rests on the designers imagination/ideation skills.

 

I can't disagree more. The effect of the computer together with CAD/CAM-manufacturing simply is, that it offers potential, which did not exist 40 years ago.
The designs we see today exist, since it's possible to not only draw them, but also to make them.
And believe me, there's a lot of wank in front of the workstation screens nowadays. I experience it it all the time. "Look, what's possible". I can't hear it any more.
It's not just the design and styling. It's also the question, whether manufacturing is managable. With the future increasing 3D-print even for mass production and serious applications I fear, we will see more atrocities.

Yes, but you are missing my point.

The atrocities you speak of are ultimately approved by the designers in charge. They have complete control.

 

O.k. I agree. And this is, what I meant in my first post. No more aesthetes from the -italian- Pininfarina era.
But the same, or even worse in my country. Vulgar MBs and BMWs.

Today’s designers are so much more constrained by aerodynamic and safety requirements.

 

I think it's great the F8 gives a nod to the iconic 308.
Though I like the lines of the SP38 even more as I think they more closely follow the 308.

Correct, the issue is that these days the cars are so much quicker they need so many more aerodynamic aids to keep them stable. They all look like racing cars rather then road cars.

 

Good, that you mention it. Congrats for the 50th birthday of the Porsche 917. It was incredibly fast AND looked great.

I know what you mean but...

I don't see a misplaced line or extraneous detail on the F8. Everything seems well placed and thought through. Yeah, there's more going on with this car than with a 308 but the design is pretty balanced on this car.

Separately, is the "tribute" explicitly of the 308 or is it just a tribute of V8 models of the past? I know the 308 is mentioned in the press release but is that what Tributo refers to? A tribute to the 308?

If that's the case, will we see a Tributo GTS?

In the end it's all a matter of taste and personal preferences. I still like Bauhaus inspired architecture style.

Yeah, the design could be simplified but then you'd end up with a 360. Kind of bland in my opinion.

Besides, if you want Bauhaus in an automobile, buy a Porsche.

...and, by the way, these cars are miserable on today's roads, should you take the extremly audacious decision to abide by the speed restriction.
I mean, at the standard speed limit here of 80 km/h (50 mph) my poor 328s are already like a dog on his leash; I just can't imagine how the poor F8 would feel. What a waste.

This is a bit out of topic Martin, but, basically:

Speeding of:
less than 20 kph above the limit outside a city: 68 euros and less one point on your driver's licence
less than 20 kph above the limit inside a city is 135€ and less one point
(The point will be recovered after six months if you are able to spent those six months without been caught speeding again)

above 20, but less than 30 kph outside a city: 135€ fine and 2 points less
above 30, but less than 40 kph outside a city: 135€ and 3 points less and your driving licence suspended for three years.

speeding of 50 kph or above: 1500 euros fine, 6 points lost, licence suspended for three years including all forms of wheeled transportation and your car might be confiscated and sold at auction by the administration.
doing this again after having already been caught once for the same offence: 3750 euros fine, 6 points lost, licence suspended for three years or even revocated; your car IS confiscated and auctionned, and you get three months in prison. Better have a good lawyer then.

They are specifically referencing 308 & F40. Twin rear light clusters (308 & F40) & louvres (F40) are the key elements given the hat tip.

 

Did anyone actually watch the presentation? The first intro video was terrible, made it look like the car was coasting not driving.
