So I am selling this high end car. Buyer and I agree on the deal pending the ppi. PPI was done at a local Porsche dealer to the tune of $450 paid for by the buyer. The service advisor called the buyer at the end of the PPI and gave the car a raving review except that there has been repaint on the bumper and the hood. Buyer is very particular and is looking for a show piece so he backed out of the deal.

I'm scratching my head because I am dams sure there is no paintwork done. The next day, it dawned on me that there is an expertly applied clear bra on the bumper and the hood and the idiots at the dealer measured the paint thickness right through the clear bra which makes the reading thicker than the rest of the car and he came to the conclusion that there have been repaint done.

I called the buyer back but we both agreed that the deal is jinx, so we let it go.

Warning to you guys who love clear bra. You cannot fix stupid.

The other problem with clear bra is that at least the older products clouds with time. Then if you want to have it removed, no one will guarantee there will not be paint damage causing the clear bra areas to have to be repainted. I believe the new products are better on these issues but only time will really tell for sure. Makes me wonder is the ceramic finish may be a reasonable alternative but the cost of the ceramic products seems to be a put off.

I installed clear bra on my BMW 4 years ago and recently had to remove the Clear Bra from the front right quarter panel. The Clear Bra was easy to remove and did not damage to the paint. You got to give credit to the guy who installed the clear bra if he could fool a Porsche dealer installation.

Buying and selling is always drama. I'm cross country now, buying a new racecar at agreed price 3000miles away from home. The seller is now trying to squeeze me for more money since I have shown my commitment to the deal. Let's see who blinks. It won't be me as I am getting on a plane back home.

Very, very cool. Number 1 rule in doing a deal. You need to be able to walk away. Also very uncool of the seller if he only put this out there when he thought he had you.

The clear bra guy did a great job!!
It's the absolute idiots at the dealer that did not check to see if the car has clear bra. All you need to do is look under the edge, or feel under the edge.

Thats too bad but also if they guy wants a show piece he may not have wanted a clear bra as well.
So again if you have a show piece leave it that way I guess.

Ceramic coating serves an entirely different purpose from clear bra. Nothing that goes on as a liquid will ever truly protect from impacts. Unfortunately there are a lot of coating companies with less than scrupulous marketing methods misleading people

This unfortunately is true of far too many in the sales industry.
I have become a sceptic in life.

Is the origional Ferrari paint bad? The car has not been resprayed and still the clear bra folks will not guarantee the removal of the product. For this reason I have not had the product removed and am living with the discolored clear bra.

Never seen or heard of a problem with OE paint. Was the car built prior to 1983?

No it is a 2008 612 OTO (build date 9/2008) and the earliest the clear could have been applied was June 2009 when the car was first sold (I suspect the original car buyer backed out of the deal because of the economy). I have been told that if the product has been on the car for over 5 years I may have a problem with its removal and possibility of paint damage? Several facilities have said much the same thing. Maybe over cautious or don't want any liability for the removal?

I've had mixed results with clear bra. I have had it redone on cars that had original paint and it has lifted the clear 2 out of 5 times. These were redone by the original companies that applied them (two different outfits). One was a bumper, it had to be recleared. The other was on fender, but fortunately it was on the inside edge of the fender, so it was easily done with a blend without reshooting the entire fender. Both even said when removing there is a risk, regardless of age, even though they take great caution when doing so. It really is a crap shoot in my book...but that is just my experience.

Well I have no idea where or who put on the clear bra originally so I will have to eat the cost of the paint damage. While I don't like the discoloration I don't want to repaint the front of my car either. I guess I will put up with the discoloration until I find it too offensive. When I am driving it is find just when I walk by the car in the garage when I notice it and get myself wound up.

No idea, these guys are the experts, so I make the policy not to tell them how to do their work. But both places advised that they cannot guarantee the clear or paint could possibly lift.

Maybe they need to find better people. I have had cars done and redone. Paint never came up.
