Do you want me to fix it or what... I need to know O/S and Browser :p These guys are useless :p

Javascript is way more popular than Java.
C++/C# is popular in gaming development and Assembly is still used in game engines.

Yes Ruby is a pain and is coming ever so popular as well because that is this generation of coders. I stay away from it. And if your into data analysis R is becoming very popular as its the most dumbed down language I have come across lately and easy to learn

But I write software mainly as one off's and proprietary software. I stopped doing mass market as you spend most of your time losing time and money supporting incompentence.

What I have noticed on slow platforms is mainly how the code is written that slows it down. It mainly stems from the fetch/request functions were the data blocks storing information is widely spread out instead of simplifying to more simple blocks of code and stored data. Then they start adding plugins which then validates the functions and sends the information back which slows the whole process down. And lots of these plugins that they attach to the code monitor your activity which later bring up things as popups you previously googled.

I've been told that a slow performing platform is usually a badly written code, which I have seen on many of occasions.

IE is a memory whore. Microsoft Edge is even worse. If you never actually turn your PC off completely to power off shutdown then it just slows the PC down over a period of time to a point that everything slows down. Clear your cache and shutdown the PC you find that it ends up working better

Also depends on whether the application (program) is doing sequential or indexed searches (some OSs will only do one or the other)

I'm running good old W7 and IE. Noticed big slowdown when loading pages about 5-6 months ago. I've tried to figure it out and it looks like excess memory usage connected with inserted videos and the "Share This Page" links at the bottom as well as the advertisements. Some threads with videos in them take so long I kill the page. Even when a page loads, an embedded video gets choppy playback but if I click on the YouTube at the bottom of the player it runs just fine in YouTube.

I have made no changes to this laptop since I bought it for my daughter at least 7 years ago. It looks like when embedded videos are on the page over 3MB of ram are used with only 4MB of ram in the unit and the video card shares the ram. Processor is an I5-2430M. Had a couple bluescreens too with error condition related to ram and errors with IE crashing and having to reload on Fchat. Adds seem to be the last things that load just before the videos. Some of FChat has sadly become unusable. Rob - not paying you the $10K to research this - just giving you some data if you care. In general the internet has outpaced this units' ability. I cannot run any twitter embedded videos because it says my browser sucks. Could care less about twitter but something definitely changed with how this units works with FChat. Best.

Sorry, change MB to GB. I don't know what tether means and I don't own a smart phone. I have not changed the internet service or the router either. The PC has been great until the adds and the embedded videos. It is a 17" display and a full keyboard though!!! The twitter stuff I could care less about its just everyone here links to it instead of describing their point. It tells me to load other browsers or operating systems and I just don't think that's worth the hassle. Thanks for the feedback though.

Yep that is correct. I have known some people that can write a compute algorithm that can process both backwards and forwards eliminating this issue. But it really starts to chew through your cpu

The AMD Athlon is a great CPU, until Intel paid developers to write software that benefited the Intel CPU architecture that made AMD look slow and Intel win the CPU wars giving them market dominance. When AMD released the AMD 64 CPU, Intel had nothing to compete with and failed with the Pentium 4. Their option was to pay there way to CPU victory

    You poor bugger :)

Tether is an option on your smartphone but seeing as how you don't have one forget it.

But it would be worth downloading google chrome and putting the uBlock adblocker on, takes minutes and you may be happier.

Then go into the uninstall programs section and delete all programs you don't use, reboot and I'll bet the thing starts to speed up due to memory being released

Intel got into a LOT of trouble when they stole DEC's technology to make their processors go above 100MHZ back in the day.

DEC's Alpha chip was the standard back then and was used in many supercomputers

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEC_Alpha

Doesn't tell the story I lived through but then Wiki is like that :p

Yes I remember them. They were using RISC architecture which I always thought was developed by Motorola. Back in the day Motorola RISC CPU's were extremely fast. I believe Motorola eventually went to SoC technology

My team were part of the "wrecking crew" to test the reliability of the CPU chip but it was definitely the fastest in it's day and didn't need a HUGE fan on top of it to stay cool
