    Hi all -

I searched briefly, sorry if this has been asked in the past. I'm hoping for a few quick and concise answers...

The engine is going back in today following our major service and I need to know the following fluid capacities:

    * Engine oil: External oil tank and oil cooler removed and drained during service, engine 'sump' drained from below. How much oil to put back in? Owner's manual states 2.5 gallons (9.5L) - not sure if this is full capacity or what gets replaced at an annual service. Is it proper to put in a couple of gallons and then monitor the oil tank level with a running motor? It seems like Mobil1 0W-40 is the preferred lubricant? If not, what?

    * Coolant: how much to refill and what is the preferred brand? OM states 2.9 gallons (11L)

    Thanks in advance!

When I did my engine out, I put in about 9 quarts and then I checked it running with oil temp at about 150 degrees, the oil level should be between the low and full mark on the dipstick. Everyone has their own favorite brand of oil. Mobil 1 is fine. Ferrari recommends pennzoil 5w-40. As far as the antifreeze goes, I used the blue bmw coolant and I don't remember how much it took. I used the vacuum fill method and it worked great. No air pockets and no need to bleed.

I many peo0le use mobil one, probably most common. I put in about 1 litre less than the manual states sthen start the car and start checking it once the engine fans kick in. I use 5w30 but that can vary a bit. If you do a search there is alot of discussion and a lot of good arguements.
For coolant I use bmw blue coolant and again one of the more popular.
For transmission its redlline again likely most popular. Also good discussions on here about the different additives and which. O8l not to use. I think mist agreed redl8ne shockproof was the not to use but do not quote me on that do the search.

Again manual states for coolant. I th8nk it was around 8 litres but check. Your service manual.

Oh and if you did the service yourself congrats

    Start with …

8 quarts of oil, then add
3 gallons of coolant is plenty
1 gallon of gear box oil + a little bit

    Yes.

Coolant additive packages are age sensitive, not mileage. Most are good for 300,000 miles provided you do that within the time limits.

Is there any recommendation for priming the oil system? Disconnect the coils and crank for 10 seconds?

If you feel the need Matt and have a car with an immobilizer that does not cut the starter off, just don't disarm the immobilizer and give it a crank.

Chances are it is going to crank a while to purge the air from the fuel system.

    Good point.

Keep in mind, you did not rebuild the motor (if you did, assemble lube would be good) so the parts will still have an oil film.

Yup. Oil pressure does not lubricate engines, oil does.

Because it is used by so many fleet operators. I want it in 55 gallon drums in concentrate but cant get that. I hate paying $20 a gallon for water.

I can buy antifreeze cheaper in 1 gallon bottles than I can in a barrel.

Might call the local Cat dealer and get CAT ELC.
