Once you remove the TIP, the side of the diode connected by trace to the resistor (which is also connected to one of the TIP legs) will probably be free (unconnected to any other component) so you can test it then in-situ. When one side of the diode is free, it does not matter if, and where, the other side is connected.

In order to be protection for the TIP against inductive spikes from the pump motor, the diode would have to be connected across the TIP's collector and emitter with its cathode to the collector. However, the diode is connected to the TIP's collector with its anode and its cathode does not seem to go to the TIP emitter but elsewhere.

Otherwise, TIP142 (Darlington type) already has a built-in protection diode so it does not require an external one.

I ordered a replacement pump as cheap insurance (less than $60 from RockAuto). As the Lady says, "These go out quite a bit, so it's not really worth pulling them from junkyard vehicles 'cause they're usually seized."

As per the video, there's a size difference for the pump's hose connections. We'll see how that turns out once the part comes in.

I received a note from another one here on F-Chat. He has an original second gen ECU (151711 with the black back), his R82 is green as well. It's labeled "k8537".

I assume on the original pump the brown wire was '+' and the black wire is '-' ?

    Hi guys!
I am currently rebuilding one of this modules for the HVAC of a 348 that got severely damaged because of a short.

Can anyone tell me what the red component is and its MPN? Is it a PTC? A Varistor?

    Best regards!

Looks like a Transient Voltage Suppressor. Can you see the markings on it?
