SKY showed the damage this evening in detail. That was not significant from what I see. He just lacked pace etc. Bottas had a good day and LH did not.

yep that's it. It was a very small piece that broke off. Honestly we've had (recent races!) had guys with CHUNKS missing around the same area and not impacted that much pace wise. Either Mercedes have a magic floor or it's what you said....;)

He hit a bit of road or a curb. He inherited all of MW's luck.

It was a storm/water drain for the track. A good track would yield that one should avoid this area????????????

It looked like he hit a dip in the grass. I kept thinking if Charlie W. was still around, he would have caught that dip and have if fixed before the race.

Check out that tolerance from the tire to the floor(noticable when the floor curves around the tire and disappears behind the tire relative to the angle of the pic). That's tight.

Any extra "clag" (Hobbs terminology) or dirt/gravel would also cause that "glued" piece to fail.

Bottas dropped Lewis-and the rest of the field-like a bad habit at the start and during the race.

Lewis talking about going for fast lap towards end of the race tells me the car wasn’t as damaged as MB are talking about now; they act like he dragged it home ala Senna in Brazil 1991.

Just above the F1 logo you can clearly see the drain. Since Charlie did walk the track on the 1st day his team would of checked to make sure it was welded down. It's a street circuit after all and drains are part of the road.

Well known and a good track walk would show a driver that. Ricci just made a bad move.......

Reminds me of Kimi at Silverstone in 2016 (?), when he ran a bit wide on the opening lap and had a decent shunt over that kerb a mile away. Paying more attention would've helped, but similarly, how many drivers truly expect to be there at any point during the weekend...

    coulda woulda shoulda moment.

Genuinely I think few drivers would really have noted either bits. Schumacher springs to mind immediately...Vettel also spends an enormous amount of time going every detail surrounding the track.

Bottas got the better start, Hamilton wasn't too far off in pace for the first few laps. Once he picked up the floor damage (Mercedes said today that it was likely from hitting a kerb), his pace would have been slowed slightly... the biggest factor was the early pit stop to cover Vettel's early stop. That left Hamilton with a long way to go on the Medium tires, so I think he was just managing his pace to bring the car home with some margin to spare for safety car. Once Bottas was in the lead and had a gap, Hamilton wouldn't have tried for an overtake, so he just cruised to the end. I think the gap from Bottas to Hamilton was deceptively large... just as I think the gap from Mercedes to Ferrari was deceptively large. Ferrari's car is much better than this - whether poor setup leading to poor tire management, or just that the outwash-focused front wing doesn't give enough downforce in lower speed corners, I expect to see Ferrari fighting for pole and race lead in Bahrain.

Can't really mute mods, I suppose we just gotta be careful not to be ambiguous or say something they don't like...

Apologies I thought it was a drain. There is a drain next to the pits section.

It's still not the race directors responsibility to mow the grass :p and no one would of looked at that patch of grass and thought this will take a wing out, probably because cars aren't suppose to cross that yellow line :p
