Hehe, yf Max had had is way, we would have a spec 'world engine.'
Anyway, your opinion was that the sport was completely healthy before the hybrid era then? You like the loss of trad. European rounds and Tilke circuits then...and all the gimmicks (as substitute for real fixes) that have come and gone since ~2005?

No, I certainly haven’t enjoyed the sport since then, and I don’t support these ****ty tilke domes, but Bernie made money, he did deals, European governments wouldn’t pay, so he went elsewhere, that’s business.... I agree most with the fact that F1 is a business nd Bernie made everyone very rich. Liberty, however, want to make everyone poorer (except themselves), and keep introducing ******** ideas that dilute the racing and pander to eco nutters... that, I don’t agree with.

On the whole, if a country refuses to pay for a GP, then they can’t have the GP, economics. Let’s face it, if liberty keep running things the way they do, f1 is gone in five years or under anyway, it won’t matter who does or doesn’t pay for their GP, no one will be watching anyway

How have then done that though? Most of your grievances seem more to do with FIA/Todt, and were in place or coming well before the Liberty purchase.
"Make everyone poorer (except themselves)"....that was precisely the motto of F1 during the CVC era.

What’s up, practicing the nonsense arguments in readiness for the racing to start? I’ve made my feelings very clear on numerous occasions about the state of F1, and plenty about the stupid and unnecessary ******** liberty have tried to introduce. If you are unclear, have a read back through my post history. I don’t care enough to keep this back and forth going with you

Whatever... but again, most of that stuff really has nothing to do with Liberty...
IMO they have purchased a substantially broken and dysfunctional sport with a serpentine structure and have a very serious obstacle in the form of Todt's FIA...
I cannot say they are good are bad, but imo they are without any question more preferable than the CVC...

    Secret F1 data & dimensions

Red Bull has the shortest car

Wheelbases and angles of attack of the cars are among the most secret data of the cars. The teams spy on each other and use photos to calculate the most important dimensions. A team has provided auto motor und sport with the data.

It used to be normality. All Formula 1 teams announced the overall length, width, height, wheelbase, front and rear lane when introducing their new cars. In addition the weight. The angle of the car 30 years ago played no major role. So you did not care about it.

Today, the teams say only as much as they have to. The total width of two meters is the same for everyone, because everyone goes to the maximum of the regulations. The weight of 743 kilograms including driver is also identical, because all are at the weight limit. The rest of the dimensions remain secret.

Actually ridiculous, because the teams know each other at the latest after the first week of testing exactly. The data is determined by photos. And so it works: All cars are photographed at slow speed in the pit entrance from the side. If possible in exactly the same place to reduce the error rate. The same thing happens from above.

Since the diameter of the wheels is known, all other dimensions are determined from the scans and then compared with their own data. The comparison of the measurement with the real data results in accuracy of the measurement.

In our case, the team in question has determined an accuracy of 0.5 percent for the wheelbases. At the angle of attack, the calculation is naturally higher at just under 5 percent. But that does not change the relationship. The longest measured car is also real the longest car. And the one with the largest angle of attack actually drives at the rear with the greatest ground clearance. The trend is always the same.

79 millimeters between Mercedes and Red Bull

So where are the 2019 cars? One thing can be said. The wheelbases are all awfully long. Too long. No car measures under 3.60 meters between the wheels. 2021 should change that. Then the wheelbase should be at a maximum of 3.40 meters. At the moment, Mercedes still has the longest wheelbase with 3,698 millimeters, closely followed by Sauber with 3,697 and Toro Rosso with 3,693 millimeters. With a wheelbase of 3,619, the Red Bull RB15 is the most compact car in the field.

That Red Bull and Toro Rosso and Ferrari and Haas have different wheelbase surprised a bit. Do not these teams work hand in hand with the design of the cars? Haas, for example, takes over Ferrari's suspensions 1: 1. "Nevertheless, our car can be longer or shorter because we have to build our own chassis. The height of the drivers can also make a difference in the chassis length, "explains Haas Operations Manager Ayo Komatsu.

At Red Bull there is a second explanation for the differences in the cars of the A- and B-Team. "We did not make the decision to increase synergy until after the summer. Since parts of the Toro Rosso were already developed, "explains sporting director Helmut Marko. The chassis is one of those parts that engineers have to commit early because of the long lead time.

    Renault drives largest employment

While the wheelbases are all within a relatively narrow range of 79 millimeters, there are larger differences in the angle of attack in the field. The car with the lowest ground clearance in the rear is still the Mercedes W10 with measured 84 millimeters. The Renault RS19 is located at a height of 141.2 millimeters at the rear axle at the other end of the scale. This results in the case of Mercedes an angle of 1.16 degrees, at Renault 2.15 degrees.

However, our measurement comes from the first week of testing in Barcelona. In the second Mercedes has apparently increased the angle significantly. According to our information, by almost 20 millimeters. Prompt, the car was faster.

Allegedly, Mercedes wants to moderate this way moderately continue, with the engineers because of the length and the basic philosophy of the car certain limits are set. Ferrari lies with a ground clearance of 113.4 millimeters behind and a pitch of 1.64 degrees closer to Mercedes than to Renault.

Red Bull drives as the inventor of the salaried car behind with 131.1 millimeters of ground clearance. The subfloor is angled 1.93 degrees relative to the road. Renault, Racing Point and Toro Rosso have gone more extreme with their 2019 cars than the pioneer of this vehicle concept.

The strong angles of attack can often only be achieved with a trick that, according to experts, is on the verge of legality. Our team has also measured the so-called "Chin Height", ie the height of the skid of the subfloor above ground. From this it can be determined that certain floors at the front end must be bent slightly upwards. Otherwise, she would have permanent contact with the asphalt.

Power unit 2019 from 990 horses: Ferrari and Mercedes are even, Honda and Renault detached.

During the qualifications of the Bahrain GP, two institutes carried out phonometric surveys to detect the power units that fell compared to last year. Honda pays a gap of 38 horses from Ferrari and Mercedes and Renault is just below.

The Ferrari 064 and Mercedes-AMG F1 M10 EQ Power + even power units are. Two institutes for recording phonometric data presented themselves with their state-of-the-art tools in Sakhir to gather very interesting information on the 2019 engine power.

The first datum that would have emerged in the qualification of the Bahrain GP is that the wall of the thousand horses has not broken through anymore. . And this is already interesting news: there has been a small step backwards because lubricating oil can no longer be used as a fuel additive.

The major controls of the FIA, therefore, have made impossible a practice to the limit, if not beyond. The surveys, in fact, read a peak of 990 horses in Q3 when Ferrari and Mercedes used the most extreme engine maps.

The regression, if we want to call it that, will certainly be recovered with the homologation of the units 2 and 3 that will be more advanced and can count on anti-knock fuels able to increase the pressure in the combustion chamber. Ferrari should be equipped with steel pistons that have been around for a long time.

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Some would have pointed out that the Ferrari power unit would be able to make better use of the electric power of the MGU-H, while the Mercedes would have a small advantage in the endothermic engine. The fact is that, according to phonometric data, the two engines are practically the same and if the W10s in Bahrain had been slower than the speed trap in qualifying it was only because they were more loaded with wings.

In the race the motors of the challengers in the world have reduced the powers even drawing speed at the speed trap very similar with a peak of Sebastian Vettel of 331.1 km / h, while Lewis Hamilton arrived at 330.3 km / h and Charles Leclercs 329.2 km / h.

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

It is therefore interesting to note which is the real gap between the other two engines. Around the 6-cylinder Honda there was a big marketing campaign to emphasize the growth of the Japanese unit that certainly made a big step forward in the winter.

There was overtaking on the Renault in terms of pure power, so it is justified that the Red Bull men praise the work done by the Japanese that offered a more compact engine than the Renault thanks to a manic packaging and with a delta of horses that are measurable, but the gap between Mercedes and Ferrari remains very large: there is talk of 38 horses!

In short, it's a lot of stuff, which puts the Milton Keynes team back in the natural role of a third wheel, but certainly not a challenger for the world title. In the face of who was playing a sheet music out of tune, claiming that the Honda power unit had arrived at only 10 horses from the new Mercedes engine. Too bad they were so convincing in shooting her big that Lewis Hamilton had believed it too.

And the Renault, then? It has sunk to the bottom of the list of the four Builders, with 7 horses less than the Honda. Little stuff, one might say, and it explains why Carlos Sainz came in with the McLaren MCL34-Renault only one tenth from Max Verstappen's RB15 in Q3.

The differences have been seen more on the race pace, given that Honda seems to suffer less from the reliability problems that particularly affect the MGU-K of the French. They have been suffering from repeated failures of this component for five years, but the French have not been able to find a definitive solution to their troubles. Otherwise they could push the propeller to much higher peaks. But it would be enough to ask what Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg think: to get an answer it would be enough to look at their faces ...

Whoa! This is a bit surprising!

    https://www.motorsportweek.com/news/id/22215

Maranello - Charles Leclerc has admitted he ignored a Ferrari team order to remain behind team-mate Sebastian Vettel during the opening laps of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Polesitter Leclerc fell behind Vettel at the start of the race before dropping to third when Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas overtook him too. However just a couple of laps later a small mistake at Turn 1 by Bottas allowed both Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to get ahead of the Finn.

Leclerc then set about chasing down Vettel a couple of seconds ahead and caught the German quickly.

"I'm quicker guys" came over the team radio as the 20-year-old made sure Ferrari knew he had more pace and just a lap later he slipstreamed Vettel down the start/finish straight to retake the lead of the Bahrain GP.

However an unbroadcast radio message from Ferrari to Leclerc, which came after his own message saying he was quicker, told him to hold position for the next two laps.

"Stay there for two laps, stay there for two laps", was the order, which was sent at Turn 10 of Lap 5, but Leclerc overtook Vettel at Turn 1 on Lap 6, just five corners after the message.

Leclerc confirmed after the race that he went for the overtake despite the order because the opportunity presented itself.

"I was just letting them know [I was quicker]. Then I think I had an answer, saying to me ‘OK, stay like this for two laps’ but then on the next straight I had the opportunity to go for it, so I went for it and it was a successful pass and then I was just quicker, so then I did my race.

"It’s always a tricky situation when you get to fight your team-mate because the risks are very high and, as in every team, I think, they warn you before the race: OK, you can try things on different people, but with your team-mate, please be careful – which is something normal.

"So it’s always obviously that something more. But yeah, I had the opportunity on lap five and I didn’t hesitate, I just went for it. I was happy it was successful the first time I tried, especially after the bad start. So yeah, happy with how it ended-up."

UPDATE – In a shock announcement, Sebastian Vettel and Scuderia Ferrari have parted ways in the wake of the Barhain Grand Prix. It was announced this afternoon at the team headquarters in Maranello that he will be replaced immediately by Fernando Alonso, who was previously with the Ferrari team, before leaving for McLaren. The rift is thought to have been caused by Vettel being incensed that Charles LeClerc passed him on the front straight on lap 6 of the Bahrain Grand Prix and the team being angered by Vettel’s spin while battling Louis Hamilton later in the race.

Mattia Binotto: “While we are disappointed with this sudden departure from the Scuderia, we cannot have a driver who under performs and then throws away points that will be needed as the season progresses”.

Fernando Alonso: “It is wonderful to be back with the Ferrari team where I had a good success in the past but did not achieve all that we could have. It will be fantastic to be back in F1 in a car that has F1 power”.

Efforts to get a comment from Sebastian Vettel were unsuccessful.

Great. Another circuit in trouble.

The City Council of Barcelona suspends the financing of the Circuit

Barcelona City Council has decided to suspend its financial support to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the year 2019, pending the clarification of the alleged irregularities uncovered in the audit of the installation's finances. Joan Fontserè, the director of the circuit, woke up this Friday with graffiti on the facade of his home.

Gerardo Pisarello , first lieutenant of the mayoralty that governs Ada Colau, of the party Barcelona in Comú, has announced that the administration will paralyze the public financing that contributes to the Circuit.

An audit of the year 2017 detected more than 500,000 euros in irregular remuneration, information published by the newspaper El Mundo to which the Circuit responded with an official statement to defend the transparency of its management.

Barcelona City Council is one of the public entities that financially support the Circuit, which has a deficit of 10 million euros per year thanks to cooperation with the Catalan political establishment, especially the Government of Catalonia, which owns 78%.

"In 2015 we announced that it was necessary to prioritize public investment in Barcelona and that we gradually withdrew the support of the Circuit de Montmeló.With the possible fraud, we stop the contribution of 2019. Not one more public euro until the facts are clarified", published Pisarello through social networks.

In parallel, Joan Fontserè, director of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, has denounced on his personal Facebook page that has dawned with graffiti against his person in front of his house and his parents. Fontserè Fontserè

"This morning Sant Feliu -de Codines- has dawned showing the worst of their faces. Someone has painted the site of Primines Codines-municipal candidacy in which it participates-, in front of my house, of the house of my parents, with attacks towards my person based on defamations ".

"In reference to the news published in El Mundo, it should be specified that it is 'Complements Ad Personam' that practically all of the staff perceive in order to adapt the base salary that each group of professionals is assigned in the Collective Agreement of application , with the remuneration of the labor market, these complements ad personam have been applied in Circuits de Catalunya since its creation in 1991. Binotto: "Wing and front suspension do not touch, we work on aerodynamics"

The Ferrari team principal expects important changes for France, but does not exclude the possibility that results will arrive even earlier. The SF90 fails to send the tires at temperature: "They were deliberated after the project was already in a very advanced stage".

Mattia Binotto has made the technical point, and not only, on the moment of Ferrari, ranging from the analysis of the current situation to the Scuderia's medium and long-term objectives. A very clear picture emerged, in which the main evil affecting the SF90 project stands out: the lack of feeling with the Pirelli 2019 tires.

Binotto has also clarified the future, confirming that the 2020 project has already started, and that it will benefit from the indications that will come from the development of the current car. The question about the possible return of Simone Resta to Maranello could not be missing, and here Binotto skilfully dribbled, giving the impression of a 'yes' but in a long period difficult to quantify.

What problems are affecting the SF90?
“After the Barcelona stage, we analyzed the data collected during the race weekends, trying to identify the strengths of our car and our performance compared to our rivals. In Spain it has emerged clearly that under certain conditions, and in particular in slow corners, for various reasons we are not as competitive as the Mercedes ".

"The reason for all this is something we have to investigate and work with. Let's try to give explanations also connected to the development of our project. This year's tires are different from those of 2018, no controversy, it's simply a matter of done".

"The main difference compared to last season is that in 2018 we were able to get the tires up to temperature very well, and we had to concentrate mainly on keeping them controlled so that, at lower temperatures, there were no grip problems. This year's tires are very different: it is much more complex to bring them up to temperature and reach the operating window, it is a process in which they must be heated a lot ".

"And to achieve this we must concentrate on many aspects, working on the braking temperatures, on the cooling of the rims, but especially on the aerodynamic load. It is not only the downforce itself that is important, but also how the load is balanced in function of curves with high and low load. You also need to understand which is the target that you give yourself for what concerns the aerodynamic efficiency compared to the maximum attainable downforce ".

"Our aerodynamic efficiency is good, you see it on the straights, but that doesn't mean the downforce is too. In the end it's about the interaction between aerodynamics, suspension and the complete package. Our car is efficient but lacking in some aspects, downforce peaks. We are trying to improve our car step by step ".

On several occasions you have called Ferrari a young team. What do you mean?
"I talked about a young team and I probably have to apologize because I'm not so young myself ... and we probably don't look very young. By young team I mean that many of us have recently changed roles, I first became Team Principal just a few months ago. Other technicians have also changed jobs recently. In this sense we are a young team ".

"These changes undoubtedly bring advantages, because they allow the birth of new ideas and more creativity and dynamism in development, but at the same time our organization must settle and grow, acquiring experience and skills".

Is the dual role of technical director and team principal weighing a little?
"My double role? I only have the role of Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari, my role is to manage the whole team. Also in the past, as Technical Director, I held a managerial role, let's say not the classic DT that can be found in Formula 1 ".

"At Ferrari, the DT is responsible for both the chassis and the engine parts, and I managed both of these aspects. It means that you can't be a specialist in the engine, the chassis, the DRS, the batteries, the aerodynamics: the DT in Ferrari It is seen as a managerial role. Since I have been a Team Principal we have reorganized ourselves internally because we needed support on the technical front. There are people who help me manage the whole team, in Maranello they support me in the management from the point of "Technically, their names are not mentioned because the team counts more than individuals. For example, last year Laurent Mekies was in Maranello while this year he is on the competition fields."

Yesterday Sebastian talked about tire management problems. Do you think it's a Ferrari problem only?
"We need to improve tire management, which we know well to be the same for everyone. The reason why we are not so high performing so far is technical. It is up to the individual teams to develop a machine that is capable of maximizing the package. "

Are you still convinced that the technical choice of the front wing is the right one?
"First our problem is not the peak of downforce and I don't think we should change our front wing. We have adopted a different car concept from Mercedes and we need to get the most out of our project. At the moment we are not interested in changing the front wing, at the beginning of the project we had thought of a Mercedes-style solution, and we are still convinced that there is no need to change ”.

    And on the front suspension?
"We have the solution we want. This does not mean that we must always look at new ways to improve the car and we can always think of intervening on suspensions, aerodynamics or cooling systems. But I do not believe that there is something wrong with suspensions as a principle. The problem with the tires is that we can't get them to work in the best way, it's an interaction between aerodynamics and mechanics, a compromise. We need to find the right balance to always reach the maximum potential ".

Charles today seemed to have problems putting the front tires up to temperature ...
"Yes, we had difficulties warming up the tires, a problem diametrically opposed to the situation in 2018. It is a problem, but any attempt to qualify is in some way unique and depends on how it is prepared. We will look at the data to optimize everything and be ready for Saturday's qualifications ".

Do you confirm that you have already started with the 2020 machine project?
"Yes, we are working on it. Already in summer the project for the following season must in principle be completed. It's not something we start working on in the fall, but we are working in parallel on the two projects, we need to improve the SF90 to transfer the improvements on next year's project ".

Can the runs in Canada and Austria be considered 'friends'?
"Without a doubt we lack something in terms of performance against Mercedes, but the games here in Monco are still open. We will see what happens on Saturday and Sunday. In some ways, Munich and Baku can be compared, and we went well there. "

"In FP1 and FP2 Mercedes went very well, but we have time to improve. Tomorrow we have a full day to work and then let's see what the qualifications will say. Upcoming races? France is very similar to Spain, I don't see it as a track in which we could be favorites, but it can be an opportunity to see if we have improved ".

"You can't change a project like this in a few weeks but we can try to optimize our package. In the first 5 races there were tracks in which we were competitive, so I think there may be other tracks where our package can prove itself again competitive. We will fight day after day, race by race. "

Have you changed your seasonal goals after the results of the first five races?
"Surely after the winter tests we had higher expectations than today. The ranking does not smile on us, there are many points to be recovered and there are margins to improve the machine. We always try race after race to improve the machine and develop the technical concepts. We will draw the sums at the end ".

The tires were different from what you expected ...
"Pirelli made us try these tires in the Abu Dhabi tests last year, in November, and the ones we tested were very similar to the final product we are running now. But when we tested them in November our SF90 project was already very advanced ”.

In the last few days the voice of a return of Maranello by Simone Resta has emerged insistently.
"Yes, I heard, as a team we always try to improve, especially where we think we can make progress. Simone has been at Ferrari, today he is the technical director of Alfa Romeo and he is living a great experience. We are evaluating the possibility of a return, but no decisions have been taken on the matter ".

"At the moment in the working group that operates in Maranello its role is already covered, so it is an evolving situation. But in general we always evaluate possible grafts, a team is very dynamic and it is normal that this is the case, there are always people that arrive and others that leave ”.
