Fan Fest event a huge success!

The event was hugely attended, the place was a mob scene with an estimated 15,000
    to 20,000 spectators.

A very enthusiastic crowd which enjoyed runs of Formula One cars from Red Bull which
had two cars in attendance Renault, an ex-John Surtees Honda RA301, ex-Emerson Fittipaldi
McLaren M23 (driven by Fittipaldi), McLaren Senna (also driven by Fittipaldi), the Minardi two
seater F1 car and others making runs and more on display under bright cloudless skies
with temperatures in the high 80s.

The cars ran from the south end of Biscayne Boulevard up to Bayside Mall and straight
back down Biscayne again with all of them doing doughnuts in the turnaround areas. It
was really a spectacular setting bringing back memories of the original downtown Miami
Grand Prix and the Miami Grand Prix of the Americas.

Based solely on the attendance, the event (which was free and open to the public) must be
measured as a major success which sends the message to Homestead/ISC that their lobbying
efforts against the Miami F-1 Grand Prix have been blunted. This must give Liberty Media a
renewed optimism that the Grand Prix will happen in 2020.

Thanks to our friends from the Collection Suites for hosting us in their VIP at the event,
    very nice!

    https://www.bizjournals.com/southflorida/news/2018/10/22/formula-one-exec-talks-impact-of-grand-prix.html

Formula One’s managing director of commercial operations Sean Bratches says the international motorsport event and the Magic City are made for one another.

“Glamour, luxury, fashion, aspiration – Miami and Formula One share a plethora of attributes,” Bratches told the South Florida Business Journal during Formula One's inaugural F1 Miami Festival. “F1 is the pinnacle of motorsports and Miami is a diverse, world-class city.”

The Miami festival took place Oct. 20-21 alongside the U.S. Grand Prix race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.Formula One teams Red Bull and Renault, as well as two-time champion Emerson Fittipaldi, were present at the fan event, which featured live, high-speed car runs down Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami.

Ahead of the weekend, Formula One made headlines by releasing a video of 13-time Grand Prix winner David Coulthard doing a series of donuts atop the 62-story One Thousand Museum Residences, designed by late architect Zaha Hadid.

Formula One doesn’t want its South Florida presence to end with the fan festival. Although organizers had to push back on plans to bring a Grand Prix race to Miami in October 2019, they are now aiming for a 2020 date. Some downtown Miami residents and businesses have expressed concerns about how the event would affect road closures, traffic, noise pollution and construction in the densely populated neighborhood, the Miami Herald reported.

Locals also rejected an original course layout that included a loop around the American Airlines Arena. A revised plan sent to the Miami Herald by the city would avoid the loop around the arena, with most of the track situated in PortMiami and Biscayne Blvd.

Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo sponsored legislation asking the Florida Legislature to make public funding available for event, according to the Herald. In a resolution, Carollo suggested the public funding would be a good investment because the race “will bring thousands of race fans to South Florida, which, for international tourists, can easily become part of a much larger visit to the rest of Florida and its great attractions.”

According to its website, tourists have spent $423 million at Austin-area businesses during events hosted at the track.

Bratches said the Miami fan festival was an opportunity to engage South Florida fans and build momentum for a potential Grand Prix. Miami is the fifth international city to host an F1 Festival in the past year, following London, Shanghai, Marseille and Milan.

"We only race in iconic locations," Bratches said. "There's a civic pride that comes with being a selected city because the race shines a global audience on the municipalities and countries that host us."

Interesting that the Miami Herald is mentioned (twice).

Not a single mention of the F1 Fan Fest anywhere to be found on their website. That there must have been 15K to
20K in attendance on Saturday, seems to me that warrants some mention online and in print (front page).

For sure, F1 wants the visual that Miami presents. The water, palm trees, cruise ships, downtown sky scrapers,
it's a visual that is hard to beat. And, instead of calling it "The New Monaco" as every new street race tends to
do, why not just put on the best show Miami can do and leave Monaco alone?

Still, with the enthusiastic turnout of fans Saturday and Sunday, F-1 must surely be galvanized to carry on targeting
2020. Let's just hope they reset their sights to March instead of October.

First news we’ve seen on this in quite a while.

Reason to be optimistic? I’m not really sure…

Gauging by the attendance at the “Fan Fest” last October, interest is huge. And, imagine if
they scheduled the Grand Prix for this weekend next year. Miami is absolutely going off
this week with Spring Break, the Grand Prix would blow the lid off the whole thing.

I'm optimistic but I think it's worrisome that the vote is so close to spring break.

I've been seeing nothing but bad press on TV and social media about what a crime ridden mess spring break has become.

Granted F1 would be nothing like the zoo of these "events" BUT the sceptic in me wonders if the forces that want to stop the GP are going to use the spring break bad press as leverage to stop F1. There seems to be a growing momentum of people that are fed up with these events. I hope they can see that F1 will be a positive and is a completely different crowd.

Why why would anyone with thought for ther own and there families safety after the performance of the Miami Beach police with the recent holiday ever want
to venture to an event overseen by the City’s of Miami or Miami Beach.

According to a reliable source, a full page ad ran in the Miami Herald last week practically accusing
Formula One of bribing Miami Mayor Frances Suarez, buying him golf trips, etc. making the whole
    thing seem very unseemly.

Of course, we know that Homestead/ISC is behind all this as their scare tactics, trying to convince
Miami residents (and not just those downtown) that a Grand Prix will produce more noise than a jet
airplane taking off, people camping out in front yards across the city, dogs & cats living together, etc.
is part of their well funded (to the tune of $30M in their war chest) M.O.

Expecting to hear when the City Council plans to vote as soon as news breaks.

Hopefully the vote will be delayed until people and the news cool off.

After another Ultra debacle and still fresh off the heels of the spring break disaster we need some time to distance the GP from the bad memories of these events. My only fear is that the ISC people will leverage these recent events to stop the race.

The bribery ad won't work IMO. It's Miami, everyone and every thing is has an angle. It's SOP and no one cares. Lol, if it weren't for bribes and shady deals the whole city wouldn't exist. :)

Well that sucks. there goes our Grand Prix. :(

Who wants to go to Murder Gardens to see F1 cars run around the ghetto? The whole cache of being the North American Monaco is now gone. Hopefully they ditch this plan and get back top the original location because there is no way in hell F1 will want to pick Miami Gardens as an image event. Massive fail by the organizers.

The new issue then becomes, if they were to pull this off, when do they schedule it?

The stadium is booked with football (Dolphins & Hurricanes) from August through December.

They bring it to a spring date, then there are other events including the Miami Open tennis at
Hard Rock, Ultra, etc. and there are already complaints that there's too much going on then.
And, IIRC, Melbourne has re-signed to be the season opening event through like 2025.

They can't do it in the summer, too damned hot and then, you know, Hurricanes again.

My expectations are that they'll never be able to come up with a suitable compromise and
the whole thing will be shelved.

Yeah, it was never really intended to be on the Beach side but your point is valid.

Miami has its eccentricities to be sure. Even when the city can benefit from an event such as this
taking place in downtown, the effect of bringing 250+K people to an event concentrated in the downtown
area, hotels at capacity, restaurants overbooked, private jets in holding patterns for landing at MIA and Opa
Locka, billion dollar mega yachts moored at Island Gardens, etc. just may be too much of an overwhelming
    task logistically.

Homestead/ISC has downtown interests frightened to death that F-1 on their doorsteps will be the
end of the world and the scare tactics seemed to have worked.

But, at the Fan Fest event last October when 15+K people showed up was just a taste of what an actual
F-1 race would be. The area around the event was mobbed and while organizers were claiming 80+K
in attendance (thinking about that for a second) that is more than the capacity of Hard Rock Stadium.
Even with the inflated numbers, the event came off without a hitch, there were no earthquakes in
downtown Miami and everyone seemed to be having a really good time.

There was a time when Miami went for crazy **** like this but those days seem to have faded since they,
you know, got taken for $4M to host the Miami Grand Prix of the Americas in 2002-03. The intentions were
good and right but the reality is Miami has changed and still eccentric as always, the issues of an
ever increasing population in such a concentrated area is going to put paid to events like this in the future.
