Your comment simply illustrates what a beautifully compact sports-car the GTO is, no wonder its so lightweight @ 2,875 lbs with fluids.

The other thing to note is some of our better roads in our part of Southern California do have generous lane sizes.

Well I definitely stand corrected on that!
I visited a workshop not too long ago that had a 288 in the center. It was a Saturday so none of the 15 or 20 or so cars surrounding it had been pulled out and I dare say, even with it's supercar status, the 288 almost got lost amongst them.........again speaking to the newer car size standards as well as the exquisite and elegant design of the 288 not being as garish or outlandish as the modern stylings......interesting.:)

That car was being offered in London by Ferrari dealer H.R.Owen about 3 years ago asking for £2million with 1,400kms. I wonder where it is today?

Here's something for all those who like to pronounce the peculiar virtues of driving the crap out of these glorious cars. Makes my stomach turn:

A Dino is not smaller than a 308: it looks smaller, but it isn't. The 308 is even smaller than a Dino 246: 0,5 cm less as lenght and 1,2 cm less as height. The 308 is just 2 cm wider than the Dino, that is bigger than 308 except width.

I add some info about the stolen 288 GTO, taken from Andreas Birner Ferrari Consulting FB page
    ----------------------------
    STOLEN!

The Ferrari 288 GTO s/n 53307 (complete VIN: ZFFPA16B000053307) has been stolen yesterday, May 13, 2019 around 2:30 PM near Düsseldorf in Germany during a test drive.

The thief's mother tongue seems to be Spanish, the conversation with the dealer who offered the car was held in English.
If this car should turn up anywhere or should be offered to you, please inform the police. Please share this information.

I'm wondering why they stole such a car: it's impossibile to resell it. You have to break it in pieces and sell them. But it's risky, requires a long time and you won't ever get what the car is worth alltogether. Maybe they want to ask a ransom? I cannot explain the steal of a so rare car.

The only reason I can imagine is this: someone has a burned down/completely destroyed one and wants to replace it with this car just replacing the plates.

    Any other idea?

Maybe send it to some very obscure collection where the car will just sit and never be seen by anyone else?

Yes, possible, but not probable, in my opinion: a car is not a paint, usually it goes out sometimes and will be visible: everyone can recognize a 288 GTO, it's not a Tintoretto's paint. And then who owns such a concealed collection maybe can pay a couple of M to buy it without the risk to be jailed.

But maybe you are right, who knows

    ciao
