Well, that's a rather narrow way of looking at it. Rather like saying Ferrari is slower than Merc because they finished behind them. Had Sainz not lost his wing to Verstappen, the result would likely have been McLaren ahead of RB.

Turns out McLaren just needed to drop dead weight like Boullier and Tim Goss to make big progress.

So did Ferrai pit radio the Renault pit and asked them to shut their engines off so they could salvage a podium for Leclerc?

    LOL

All I know is that McLaren has been a shadow of itself since Ron Dennis left the pitwall.

He may have been despicable at times, but he knew how to win.

I saw a podcast with Lotus F1 ex-boss Matthew Carter and he commented on why Ron Dennis switched from Mercedes to Honda. At the time, RD wanted to unlock Mercedes "party mode" when he found out about Romain Grosjean's sudden speed at Spa 2015. Carter wanted to know and spoke to the MB techs about this and they told Carter that it was a 1 time thing. That's when Ron realized he was'nt going to win in F1 with the MERCEDES PU so he made the switch to Honda hoping they would pull thru.

I believe it was to surpass Vettel. The MB techs are with the engine from beginning to end. No one outside of the team gets to touch the engine except the MB techs.

I also have an article saying the same thing.

I could post both the podcast and article if you would like.

I meant, how was a non-works team able to get it, what was the reasoning, and why only a one time thing?
What did Mercedes gain by giving them party mode, well Grosjean at least?

It was to beat Vettel for a podium finish. They told Grosjean over team radio a certain "strat mode" during said lap and Grosjean noticed when he switched to said "strat mode" the car performed better.

In 2015, McLaren was already with Honda ! So Grosjean' speed cannot be what decided him to switch to Honda.

No, the divorce between McLaren and Mercedes started way back in 2009.
Ron Dennis barred from running the team decided to expend on the road car business; McLaren Automotive.
Let's not forget that at the time, team McLaren was a de facto Mercedes factory team for some years, with MB holding 40% of the shares.
Also McLaren Automotive was a subcontractor building the Mercedes SLR.
In fact, Mercedes would probably have bought McLaren outright if the shareholders had accepted it.
When Mercedes learnt that Ron Dennis wanted to launch the gt/sportscar side of the business, they decided to pull out of the team, selling back their shares, and quickly acquiring the Brawn team (ex-Honda in fact), switching all their resources there.
Mercedes gave notice to McLaren that the supply of engine would end in 2014.
Ron Dennis signed an exclusive partnership with Honda that wanted to re-enter F1 as an engine supplier, enticed by the hybrid formula.

Yes, your correct on the McLaren Honda partnership in 2015.

I need to see that podcast again with Carter but he did mention the relationship with Mercedes and Ron Dennis....none of which you mentioned.

    @william

Okay, on the contract with MB (Mclaren) there are clauses in the contract that say if any upgrades were to happen in the engine, these upgrades would go to the silver arrows first not mentioning if there was going to be parity with McLaren or any of the customer teams.

So this was before 2015 regarding Ron Dennis-Mclaren.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It was an error on my part.

So in essence, Mercedes were not going to let McLaren or any of its customer teams beat MB.

Bad news for McLaren, for sure.
Petrobas is partly state-owned and the subject of much controversy, apparently.

I bet McLaren fights them but it will take years and cost millions. All Petrobas has to do is stop sending fuel and money and McLaren can do nothing.

Realistically, there is not much a team can do when a powerful sponsor defaults, mostly if it is based abroad.

IF Petrobas "jumped ship" to another team, they could do something about the other team. That's about all the recourse they have. A law suit would take years.

Even if spread over 5 years the amount ( $175M) isn't enormous, it will be a setback for McLaren.
