I have a modest collection of fine watches, but I've never been too much interested in Rolex. Then I saw this picture and was quite impressed with it. Since I'm in no way an expert on the brand could someone please tell me the model and any other particulars about it?

    Many thanks.

Rolex Explorer 2, pretty easy to get your hands on one.

That particular one is on an after market nato strap.

    Are all Explorer 2's GMT's?

Yes and the Explorer 1 does not have a GMT hand.

Thank you, Don. Is that a stainless steel case?

    It is.

The particular Explorer 2 you're looking at is often called a 'polar' explorer, because of the white face. They also make a black faced model.

You're looking at what is most likely a model 16570. Rolex updated the Explorer 2 a few years ago, with the new reference/model number being 216570. The biggest differences are size (the 216570 is 42mm, the 16570 is 40mm) and the color of the 24-hour indicator (it is orange on the 216570 and red on the 16570).

There is also a very early reference for the Explorer 2 - the 16550 - but they were only made for about 4 years, and what you'll most likely encounter while shopping are the16570 and the 216570

My daily wear watch, it goes with everything. I have a Yachtmaster also, I've probably worn it 6 times since I got the Explorer 2.

Would anyone care to opine on price for one in excellent, serviced and original condition, configured as the one in the opening post? Type of strap or bracelet are not critical to me, nor are papers, as long as the watch is priced accordingly.

    Thanks again.

    Jack.

    Hi Jack

Two good sources for market prices: watchrecon.com and chrono24.com

Both let you search by model and you can quickly gauge price ranges

This gentlemen already gave you all the detail, but just keep in mind the 16570 has really shot up in price over the past year or so. You used to be able to get a full kit (box, papers) for high 4s or low 5s, but now just the watches are going into 5s and 6s.

The 16570 is a great watch.

16570 polar exp.ii goes for about 6k if it has its original bracelet and box/papers.
