As for me, it may not be necessary but I always use Chevron 91 octane because of their Techron FI cleaner and sometimes Shell for my US 84 QV.

According to Birdman’s article 308 compression ratio is 8.8:1. Is this correct for all 308 also US vs Euro?

In my '89 328 I use 89 (US) octane from whatever station that's convenient when I need gas. If I had to state my most used brand locally (South TX), it would probably be Vallero. If there is no 89, I'll use premium. But 89 (US) meets the owners manual requirements.

    Morning Mike,
I fully agree with you. In Spain(Europe) the only gas available is 95-E5 or 98. I always use 95 and any service station is ok for me.

85 QV Euro. Mostly Racetrack gas here in Dallas. Switch from 89 to 91 octane with a little Sea Foam. Never a problem.

Yes, 89 for a US 328, 87 for a US 308 QV, per manual. Higher octane is unnecessary, a waste of money, and will not increase power. Whether or not higher octane fuel has better additives depends on the brand.

In the archives I ran a number of brands and octane levels for several straight fills measuring mpg one summer in the 308. There was no significant difference. I didn't have Chevron in my area (anymore)
However, Hess regular did get the best mileage so presumably the best performance.

I do live in a fairly high density area so stale gas isn't an issue.

Octane doesn't reflect energy content. For example if you add 10% ethanol to 85 octane gasoline you get an 87 octane mix, but it will have less heat content that straight 87 octane gasoline.

standard Euro unleaded fuel 91 RON for the NA 308 engine. SHELL V-POWER 98 RON (or another 98 RON brand) for the 208 turbo (almost mandatory for the first 1982-1985 model, highly recomended for the 1986-1989 model).

I always put premium in it even though I know there is absolutely no reason to. Heck, it's a Ferrari I can't put "regular" gas in it. What would people think?

US version TR - Shell 89 AKI (just in the slight hope that it's got a little something the Shell 87 AKI doesn't have ;)).

Hess gas was the best but they no longer sell to consumers. Sold all their stations a while ago. I could tell within 30 seconds when my wife filled any of our cars somewhere other than a Hess station with close to 100% accuracy, the difference was that noticable. I swear Hess was worth another 20HP.

Post Hess, the 308 gets 87 of whatever gas station I am passing... Usually Gulf since that is closest to the house.

Higher octane = harder to burn the fuel. No advantage for a 308; one is literally just burning money using it.

I have to admit, I’m guilty of this action. Will 89 do?

Unfortunately in my area of Western NY the only ethanol free fuel is 90 or 91 octane. Just got my FD and WUR back from Flowtech and it came with a note saying to only run non-ethanol fuel. I had always put that in anyway, because I see a lot of ethanol damage in my line of work , so the extra few dollars is cheap insurance from my experience.

Guaranteeing no ethanol is a good reason to use higher octane even if the earlier engines don’t need it from a compression perspective.

Here in southern NY even the premium has 10% ethanol

All grades have it here. Only select stations have non-E 90 or 91. I wish sunoco still had ultra 94. That fuel was fantastic back in the day.

That's interesting. Here in Germany Shell claims V-power is 100 RON. And when I hear 91 RON for your carb car, I think I waste money at the gas station.

I generally use BP (Amoco) Premium. But when we had the last gas shortage several years ago, I had to run a couple of tanks of Regular gas in the engine, and the 328 objected less to the lower octane than my Civic SI!

When BP stations aren't around, I'll use Shell.

I use Chevron, but any Top Tier fuel would do it for me.

I like that "Top Tier" detergent criteria were set by automobile manufacturers; not the oil companies.

Chevron was the first to achieve Top Tier with their Techron additive.

Our cars spray fuel upstream of the valves, so stronger detergents should do some good.

… as for what octane, I am embarrassed to say I use 91 just because it seems like a fancy car like a Ferrari should be using it. Yeah, I know ...
