Esprits, like most Loti, have flashes of brilliance but acres of inadequate engineering. Apart from the hodge-podge of compents, usually from British Leyland, they have built-in and unfixable faults.

The transaxle (from Renault) was marginal with half the power in a variety of Renault cars. Why did Lotus use it? Because the cars were already overpriced and couldn't bear the extra cost of a ZF transaxle.

The cylinder heads were an OK design, but poorly cast and blow head gaskets with the slightest provocation. If you want to know the secret of Ferrari engine strength, it was their deep foundry expertise. Lotus simply made them the cheapest way possible.

Why are Elans sought after and Esprits not? Because they're halfway reliable and the design faults are at least fixable. And they have a Ford gearbox.

 

EVO magazine redefined LOTUS...Lots of thrills usually sensational...

 

Geez there's some nice cars on that list of favourites Jon....I'm about to embark on the restoration of a 1964 970 Cooper S MK1 and a 1963 1070 Cooper S MK1....The early Cooper S saloons were such fun to drive...

 

My brother (Ausdino) is part way through restoration of a mk2 Cooper S. He has had it for 40 years!

He might even put up some photos!

IMO I believe there will be a Special version of the F8 but no one is admitting to it. The 488's will recover once the whole PISTA thing is over . The release of the SF90 and the soon to be released next F8 have prices escalating by a lot. This will drive the other cars higher up.

Im sure tough if there is one last hooray to the non electric car with a special F8 , without a 488 you wont have any chance especially if its numbered. And that my friend will be worth more than a Pista IMO.

Rumour has it that it has been converted from a GTS to GT (which would explain the incorect valve stems.)
