Hi All, I had a search through old posts but couldn't find anything similar to this issue. My '84 will not lock on the drivers side. It feels like the plunger knob/rod has resistance. So the drivers door won't lock with either the key or by pushing the knob down. I removed the door lock actuator and there is no resistance there. Pushing the removed actuator with the connectors still plugged in operates the passenger lock just fine. With the actuator removed the plunger knob/rod is still resistant (especially compared to the passenger side). Before I start disassembling the whole locking mechanism, does anyone have any leads as to what is happening? Here's a pic of the mechanism with actuator removed. I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. Thanks in advance. BB Image Unavailable, Please Login
Brock, I have had the exact problem with my 1987 328 GTS. After scouring the various Ferrari owner's websites, I found that a simple blast of WD-40 shot directly into the keyhole via the included nozzle tube did the trick. I have usually followed the spray with a little WD-40 on the key itself , then going thru the lock/unlock procedure just to spread it around. I have had to do this twice in the last 16 years and has seemingly not caused any long term problem. I hope this helps.
Hi Robert, thanks for that. I will try it but I don't believe thats the issue. The key lock turns fine both to the left and right. I think it more to do with the mechanism the plunger knob/rod connects to. But I can't see anything obviously wrong there? Thx
May seem obvious but the plastic piece that you push down on if screwed on too tight won’t allow the rod to go deep enough in the door hole. Try backing it off.
Hi Crowndog, I've got the door trim off and the plastic knob removed. Even if try pressing down on the metal threaded rod it is still stiff and will not actuator (lock/unlock)? Seems to be a tricky one BB
On mine, I *think* it's the same one as the hazards. As weird as that sounds. (Not sure if that's standard Ferrari wiring, you know how it is.) You'll know it's the right one if you hear the locks "activate" when you pull and reinsert the fuse.
Hi Folks, I think we can shut the gate on this issue. After pulling out the door lock mechanism and giving it very good clean, the plunger knob and key lock is working again. There was nothing broken or dislodged. I think a previous owner got a little to excited with the lubrication. The whole lock mechanism and the surrounding area was covered in a heavy black grease, which I assume was probably a heavy bearing grease. Overkill really. I think the grease just got old, hard, and impregnated with dirt over time. Unfortunately I didn't take a before picture, but below is the lock mechanism after a thorough clean. I lubed it with spray on silicone lube, and the mechanism works perfectly. Not sure about the other conversation that started here regarding fuses and power? From what I've seen the drivers door is mechanical in operation, the plunger knob actuator is only there to switch power across to the passenger plunger knob actuator, so that when you lock/unlock the driver it also operates the passenger side. At least that the way it seemed to me Thanks for all all your assistance, BB Image Unavailable, Please Login
