Has anyone purchased the groove nut socket required to place the groove nut on the drive pulley? I build my own "tool" to remove it, but to place it back on you really should use the actual tool!

If yes, would anyone be willing to sell it / lend it to a fellow 348 owner? I'll pay for the shipping of course, retunr it immediately and replace it if I damage it! For me to get the tool here to Canada will cost roughly $180. Yes that's $180 to tighten a $6 nut, once!

Here's a picture of the one I built .... I don't trust it on the way in because of what it did to the original nut on the way out.

Much obliged to anyone willing to help out!

Make 2. 1 to undo the other to install I've done this plenty of times over the year with no dramas.

Pretty sure NAPA sells them. I bought a 60mm GB ring nut socket for $18 for example.

OK, I can try to make another one. What size socket did you use, the one I used was a 15/16th, and was too big. Here's a pic of the nut after it came off. Also, why build two? Did the first one break?

I'll give them a call as well, but I have already tried some of the major suppliers with no luck. They have lots of different sizes but not a 28mm.!

    Thanks!

Wait... 15/16 was too big how can you use 28mm? 1 inch is 25.4 mm. 15/16 is about 24mm.

Not at all clear what the difficultu is here. I found 18-24 mm ring nut sockets on eBay just now for less then $10 with world wide shippong cheaply.

Hmmm, great point Ferrarium! 28mm does seam wrong. I was given the following link to purchase the tool, took note of the 28mm listing on the page and it stuck in my head. Thanks for noting what must be wrong! Glad I have not ordered yet. I need to confirm the size!

Hold on, wait a second. The 15/16ths is used because of the fact that you start with a full socket and end up with a carved groove nut tool. The 15/16ths is the size of the nut or bolt head you would use it on, not the size of the groove nut. ??? Either way the end result was OK to remove but not good enough to replace. I will confirm if the 28mm is the actual size.

Thanks for the conversation on this!

Alright, you guys are making us look bad.

Stephen, I will lend you my pro tool, but it costs $50 to ship to Canada, and it will cost you another $50 to ship it back. Them's the breaks. If you want it, PM with your address and I'll get it out today. I am traveling tomorrow so can't ship it then.

To answer the 28mm socket and 15/16 thing... 28mm is the outside diameter of the nut, but if you measure the diameter of the nut at the opposing notches, it is much smaller than 28mm. That is why you need a 15/16 12 point socket if you grind your own. I decided to buy this tool (and I make a lot of home made tools) because it is such a critical place to get right.

I also ground a tool for the large 308 clutch shaft some years ago. It gave itself up so I just bought a pro tool because I am tired of having tools break on me.

Thanks, you are very kind! I completely agree that this is one place you need to get it right and thus my quest to get a hold of a tool. I spoke with Baum tools in Sarasota, they have one for less than $100 but then the shipping duties and conversion bring nearer to $200. They also suggested over the phone that the tool might be "less than perfect". I didn't fully grasp his meaning. In any case your correct, shipping from Cali to Ottawa is silly, but your offer to take the time is much appreciated.

1/2" drive and weights almost 1 lb 12 oz. About 5.3" long

I bought RNT-28 socket from Hill Eng - GBP 50 plus GBP 25 shipping to Malaysia for the parcel that also included a heavy RNT-60 socket and a flywheel ring nut. So an RNT-28 from Hill, including shipping to the USA/CDN should not cost more than abaout GBP 65 (USD 80).

In the end props go out to jgpd99 who turned out to live in my town and was generous enough to lend me the RNT-28, which of course did the job perfectly. Thanks all for the answers and suggestions!
