You have to be kidding? This is ground breaking stuff. Imagine a wing full of batteries which can be swapped easily and economically. Can you imagine what this would do to the costs of maintaining an aeroplane? I'd love to know what can realistically be expected as far as range goes.

Imagine how much more quiet and vibration free it would be inside. I'm excited!

I’m pretty sure there’s been an electric C172 available for a while now aimed at the training market.
It has enough endurance for a one hour lesson (plus reserves) before needing to be recharged.

Actually this is far more important than electric cars etc since MAINTENANCE is the biggest thing with planes - imagine no fuel flow/contamination/sabotage issues; far less ground time considering the mechanical simplicity of electric engines...

Yesterday I stumbled upon a box of old photos in the back of a cupboard, and while trawling through them laughing and cringing in equal measure, I discovered that I had actually met Gary many years ago. In fact it was at the 1988 Bicentennial airshow!

He was so cool he even drove his car right up to his aircraft. :):)

Looks like you're extremely happy to see him too, or is that a joystick in your pocket?

Hey Steve, On those Flight tracker thingys on the interweb, it says a plane's speed is 878klms/hr at 11880m. How is that speed determined? Seems awfully fast. keep it simple if you can,I only drive a Three pedal car. :)

Of course I was happy to see him, and yes, it is a joystick...

That would be the groundspeed of the aircraft (ie. the speed over the ground, as opposed to the airspeed). So, 878km/h is about 474kt, which would be correct for a jet with a modest tailwind. 11880m is re 39,000ft, which is an easterly track, and that also makes sense as you're more likely to get a tailwind heading east.

    :)
