Wondering if anyone knows what is going on with the Mustang GT 350R engine? I have tried to read up, not found any useful info. Engines have catastrophically failed / seized up for no apparent reason, Ford is replacing them. Wondering if issue is identified, if issue is resolved, what cars are “safe” to buy if issue is solved?

I got thinking about picking one up to use as a track toy with no worries. Engine flaw= lots of worries.

Fix is simple. Oil pump gear is problem but ford has no fix. Aftermarket has fix but then that fix void ford warrantee. So since these cars still under warranty people just blow the motors and let ford replace them. Once the cars are off warrantee we will start seeing oil pumps replaced with aftermarket units and those motors will be perfect

Thanks- seems like a PR nightmare for Ford. No longer numbers matching on a limited car= diminishes value.
Maybe I should wait for warranty to expire, then pick one up.

Anybody know the failure rate? If "pushed hard" ... ?

Sad to hear. What an (otherwise) wonderful motor ... !

So doesn’t this affect the GT350 non R as well. It’s the same engine.

It is the same Voodoo, but the R gets a couple extra heat exchangers (i think) ... engine and trans oil coolers. I would agree, no reason the non-R wouldn't have the same problem if pushed

Engines also have some oil consumption issues besides the oil pump gears. People never check their oil anymore and so they pop the motor.
Oil pump gear issues have shown up on some 5.0’s as well, but normally only with forced induction. Seems the roots or twin screw blowers have more issues. Vibrations and harmonics causing gear failure is what I’ve read and been told.

I sure hope the problem isn't aggravated by the extra vibration of the flat-plane crank. I really respected Ford's decision to use it ... even though the sound is not "classic muscle", it sure does sound sweet as it's effortlessly revving

My GT350 (2016) had the oil cooler line recall which put a few of these cars on hold for awhile as they got the parts. I sold the car and let the new owner wait it out.

From what I’ve been told, is the vibration and extra rpms are causing the failure. But there are no issues with the billet gears yet.

It’s very hit or miss, problems mostly seem to be 16,17,and early 18’s.

19 and 20 have block and head improvements since both are shared with the upcoming GT500.

My friend drove his from Long Island out to road America, Wisconsin, did two days of open track, and drove it back, didn’t use a drop.

Also one theory is the cars blowing motors are the ones that were babied by their owners.

The guys winding them up and beating on them hardly reporting any problems.

I just ordered a 2020 GT350, didn’t even cross my mind to worry about oil consumption issues.

Lots of reading available on Svtperformance.com in the cobra forums, 2015+ GT350 forum.

Are they dealing on these cars yet or sticking to MSRP?

There are two GT350 R’s for sale for MSRP on Svtperformance in the GT350 forum, and the 2020 I just ordered, I’m getting it for $1000 over invoice, about $2500 under sticker

2015-16 cars, only the track pack option got the coolers.

2017 +, all models get the coolers, including the R.

At MSRP new or used 2017+ at a discount is interesting.
    Thanks for all the responses!

    Thanks

Quick research i did, the issue "may" have been an oil pump gear (opg) that "might" be shattering if stressed when cold. But that is largely "internet anecdotal", not necessarily supported by evidence, analysis and research ...

I was looking at picking one up too but I'm trying to avoid major engine issues. From what I researched, the oil pump gear idea has been thrown around but when a motor blows, Ford just ships a new one in and doesn't allow for the old one to be analyzed so only they know the real issue.
