I have always wondered how the battery can withstand the huge amount of heat coming from the car radiator even where I live in the UK, for hotter climates it must be a worthwhile mod, so I decided to make up a heat shield. Easily removable for those that like concours exhibitions.

Found a small piece of aluminium plate and cut it to shape and manufactured a small V groove where the front retaining stud is situated. This then slides into the battery carrier and is sandwiched and held in place by the top battery frame. The edges bent around the battery to deflect the heat past the battery

On the face of the plate I cut some 3mm heat resistant matting and glued it in place.

Works a treat and may help the battery from the tough environment.

sorry no pics as I got carried away and fitted it before I thought of sharing the idea! :-(

The my late model USA GTS has a factory heat shield. Just a curved piece of sheet metal welded to the battery tray.

I presume you meant Item #4...no numbers above ~35 in that parts drawing.

I have owned my 246 over 20 years and its never had one.

I doubt that part is available and think the one I made is far superior :D

It is just a piece of sheet metal you could make in a half hour if you wanted to. The one you made actually has insulation. I don't know if the original is meant to deflect heat or just road dirt and rain coming through the radiator. Maybe both.

    Thanks,

I was more concerned about heat rather than deflect as the battery is only a few inches away from the radiator. Cannot work out exactly as I dont have all the data to hand but the leaving air temp in this area must be extremely high, guessing at least 80C + given the size of the radiator, fluid temp and mass flow.

The heat shield I made does have a very good insulation matting to guard the battery. I guess it may also add a certain level of protection against stones too.

    Hi Guys,
    My late '72 Euro GT.
'looks to be original, including OEM rust! It is slightly curved with a nearly-ninety degree flange at top & bottom, as depicted in the Tav.
    Cheers,
    Coop

    Exactly.
I included the part number hoping somebody could come up with a price and astound us all at what king's ransom might be charged!

thanks, would need a better heat shield in reality as that would stop diddly squat. Typical 70's engineering solution!
    Tony
PS don't you have a battery retaining top bracket?

    Hi Tony,
    Busted!
Mine is missing. I have been relying on the 'gravity retainer' to keep battery in place. Fabricating a new one/finding a replacement has been on my to-do list since I got the car. Obviously, I've yet to get around to it.
'super easy to make from scratch or modify an existing part. There may be a drop-in solution already out there, too. Any ideas?
    Thanks for the motivation,
    Coop

    :)

sorry if I have made you more work!

You could try Alberto, he had some made a while back.

You may have to change the battery terminal. Mine has a very thick plastic sleeve over the terminal connector / boss [not the clamp] to prevent it touching the metal frame.

    Best Regards

    Tony

    Hey, that's easy work!
No excuse here; I should have taken care of it straight away.
    Great suggestions (insulation and Alberto),
