I do love the 458, really miss mine, it was a great car, sounded awesome... the look of the 488 is gorgeous too though I think, and the drive is phenomenal, it’s a tough one, not sure which way I’d go, but I think overall I would feel I’d cheated myself if I didn’t take the 488 for its sheer arcade style speed!

Then again, it may be moot - Tributo must be absolutely amazing because there is always a step between each model series, so it should be a softer riding, yet quicker, version of the Pista surely

I go to Starbucks every day. It’s four miles and l take a 55 mph highway to get there. Hit 9,000 rpms every day, coming and going in my 458 spider. Where do you live that you can’t drive 55 mph?

My dealer pulled the lines. I have an extended warranty on my 458 spider. The sound at low rpms is great. Burbles, pops, growls, etc. heaven.

Cognitive dissonance makes one support the car one owns.

My 458 spider is fast enough...scares me sometimes how fast it is.

458 is much better looking to me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Last Pinanfarina Fcar.

458 sounds better. Only Feerari road car that revs to 9,000 rpms.

458 does not lack for attention...far from it. Not bad for a seven year old car.

I saw a 488 spider going the opposite way. It was white. I love white 458s but this car just didn’t melt my butter. There is nothing like driving a red Ferrari. Nothing.

The 458 is a classic beauty IMO. I was taken by it , right from the start.

458 has the most vocal supporters here - I noticed that some time ago ;) (maybe people identify and judge themselves as the car they like, the more noise the better :D
But I could not cope with its lack of power (specially mid-range), so for me it's 488; that I will change for an F8 by the way.
Regarding what the future will hold, I'm not sure the 458 will be considered that much more special - from the 360 Modena onwards, it's only been incremental improvements, objectively better in each iteration, but each time losing some of the old-time legacy.
So to me each car older in the line is just not as good as the next one, and not different enough to compensate for that; although one may despise the turbochargers, the lack of mechanical feeling of the DCT, the loss of the 5-valve cylinders... (hopefully nobody will regret the cambelts, but you never know ;) )
A manual 355 is slower but it's really a different proposition, it's not just a less accomplished 360 - in my view there will be a stronger case for the 355 in the future, whereas the 360 to F8 will be considered very similar and the VS (CS, Scuderia, Speciale, Pista) will stand out for their rarity.

    458. But with the 488, you can slip in and out of car gatherings without anyone noticing.

There are a few white ones out there; blue is tough to find especially if you don't want TdF. I ended up buying black and wrapping it.

I actually like the side intakes on the 488/F8 as it hearkens back to the 308/328/288. I would love an F8 but can't justify the price difference.

458 Speciale will become a solid future classic for many reasons. Above CS and Scud which will always have their fanbase too.

I would only consider a 488 if I didn't have to give up my 458.

And I would trade a 488 to go back to another 458 (mine's an Italia, so I would get a Spider or a Speciale), but I wouldn't trade my 458 for a 488.

This is a very personal choice, as both are great cars. The 488 is the nicest turbo car I've ever driven, and if in future I'm in a position to have one next to my Italia, I will. But I believe the 458 is going to be a classic and it's one of the nicest Ferraris ever made. Like the 355 that blowed both its predecessor (348) and its sucessor (Modena) to kingdom come in terms of design and desirability, I believe the 458 will do the same to the F430 and the 488.

Anyway: if you're in love with your 488, enjoy to the fullest. And that car has a LOT to offer and to enjoy. Namely the Spider, imho.

If you're a 458 fanatic, keep it, drive it, maintain it and cherish it. I believe in terms of beauty, sound and future value, time will reward owners.

If you couldn't care less about how much these cars will be costing in the future when they're 10-15 years old (like I don't), you simply can't go wrong with one or the other. Although I'm just 34, I feel life is too short (sometimes even shorter than we anticipate) to worry about depreciation.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

I think the 458 Italia lines up better with my wants in a sports car than the 488 GTB.

That said, the 488 Pista could change that!

The 488 may be nice FOR A TURBO!

But there is no way l am going to pay $100+k more for a car that looks worse and sounds worse. 458 is plenty fast enough for me. In fact it scares me sometimes it’s so fast. 9,000 rpm is heaven. It is rock solid at 150 mph. Ciao Bella.

488 all the way. Superior in every way (except to some, sound).... if you buy a Ferrari primarily for the sound... you’re nuts. The 488 makes jaw dropping notes. And makes the 458 seem old.
