Will- What is flying close formation in a recip like compared to a torqueless jet fighter? My father said some pilots never got it right in the P-47 and P-51. My only experience is with modern (3rd and 4th gen) fighters.

I've kinda taken a liking to it. Since we aren't bombing and shooting stuff, there's really nothing to do but fly as perfectly as you can. The T-28 is a real baby doll. It's complex from a systems standpoint, but flies very, very well. It has huge trim wheels right behind the throttle quadrant so I tweak those right after takeoff to center the ball and to take all the forces off the stick then it's generally pretty easy matching lead from there. Prop management is the only task that takes any differing attention from a jet. I have to change the prop RPM now and then to avoid over- and under-boost situations at various points in flight but the changes are pretty predictable when needed. Whereas in a jet we are all over fuel awareness as our main attention getter, in the big radial it's keeping boost squared. In formation it can get a little tricky sometimes, but makes it fun getting it right.

My flying buddies and I flew formation many times but with strict protocols. I think that it is one of the most enjoyable things that we did as long as the rules were obeyed. Image Unavailable, Please Login

688Y was Pete Bower's 1930 Pietenpol, a total original built in 1930. Model B engine out of an Akron Funk, no brakes, Model T spring leaf tail skid, all wood "landing gear" with straight though axel. Wind vane airspeed indicator, 6 inch diameter "height indicator", whiskey compass, and a cylinder head temp gage. Board seats with a thin pillow. A blast to fly! We flew down to the Merced Antique Fly-In in 1969 and 1970 with The Pietenpol, My L-3, and Bowers in his biplane Fly Baby. Tough travel when we went through the Cascades and the mountains in northern California. Used ridge lift, and thermals many times to get over some of the big rocks. The Pietenpol out-performed the L-3 in the mountains.

Thanks. Yes, the flight went from 1100 cruising just above the layer at 7000, punching through occasional build ups, to 1330 just under a 7000 ceiling with light rain. Perfect first IFR flight where three hours later would've been too late...

My dad and I flew out to KNEW to pick up a set of wheels for my car. 4 in the back, one in the middle in his Ovation. I don't think it was cheaper than fedex, but it was fun!
