Spent the other night chatting watches a good while with some guitarist who apparently collects them before seeing him play. I wore my daily platinum Daytona and he was wearing an AP Concept Tourbillon. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Do you know John Mayer ? I saw him in concert several years ago in Minneapolis - good show and a talented guy. MDS
Don't I remember reading an article that talked about him wearing counterfeit watches he bought from some auction?
I remember now it was a deal with Robert Maron. Mayer posted on the Rolex forum about flat dials and wanted them even though they were doubts about their authenticity. I think he sued Maron and they later settled, he dropped it, something like that.
My understanding of the Maron episode differs a bit. John had bought a number of Rolexes from Maron and relied on him as an expert. It turned out a few "frankenwatches" were sprinkled in with fine examples over time. John discovered the frankens and was rightfully upset, so Maron agreed to refund for one watch but there were others he didn't want to settle up on as he argued the sales were "as-is". Ultimately it took a bit of litigation to get Maron to capitulate and settle up on the other questionable ones. The issue with collecting Rolex, just as with Ferrari, is that some examples are cobbled together. Sometimes very nicely, sometimes with authentic parts that just didn't come with the original case/chassis in question... but they're not matching numbers regardless and that's what collectors prefer and pay a premium for. As the values increase on the vintage watches, and cars for that matter, collectors must be vigilant. John is friends with Ben Clymer - founder of Hodinkee and another guy passionate about watches. It's a treat to read that site, an see the interviews with John about his incredible collection along with a number of other impressive ones on that site.
Brand new SBGA 403 Grand Seiko. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m very excited about it. I’ve wanted a spring drive for a long time. Not even sized yet please excuse the lousy picture. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Arthur always been a fan of Seiko watches for years and I have several. Partly because at the time I could not afford anything expensive or was too cheap to spend more than $1k on a watch. So I have become comfortable with Seiko watches over the years. I like the GS line and have thought of getting one to put in my watch rotation.
I'll continue representing the budget conscious fchat watch collector with a new to me constellation c case from the early 70's. Gerald Genta design, chronometer, white gold bezel, near mint condition. Not a bad find for under $400. Image Unavailable, Please Login
