My 2002 Ferrari 550 AC compressor is leaking. The dealer sent the compressor out to a local AC specialist here to have it rebuilt as it's a Delphi unit from what I understand. They just called me and told me that the compressor couldn't be rebuild as some of the seals on it were not standard and they couldn't get parts for it. Need help on where I can get the compressor rebuild as I am quoted $4700 for a new compressor by the dealer. Thanks

Thanks, has anyone had personal experience getting their AC compressor rebuild by Polar Bear Inc. ?

    For 456/550/575:
Remanufactured A/C compressor and after-market drier.
Compressor has been completely remanufactured with genuine Harrison–
Delphi parts. Most rebuilders only change seals, $895 on an exchange
basis (I need your old compressor and drier). Core exchange deposit will
be considered. Steven (856)354-1213, e-mail: [email protected] (NJ).

Tom- Believe he is an FChatter, too, and has been pretty reliable.

A 2002 550 would be very rare. What is the serial number? (last 6 of VIN)

Sorry, it's a 2001. Last 6 digits are 123844. Asked my dealer to contact Polar Bear Inc to arrange for unit to be sent down for rebuild. Cross my fingers this will work.

I also have had FCS (fuel cooling system ) warning lights on after driving the car for 20 minutes and the engine is warm. It's been happening for a couple of years now and the dealer had found no problems back then. They just told me to drive it. I think this was also what another thread said on this forum. It's not a fault so it doesn't show up when they read the ODB port. I'm hoping fixing the AC pump will resolve the FCS warning.

That is still a very late 550. The first two 575Ms were 123764 and 123765.

They do them for me all the time. No special seals. Just standard stuff.

FCS light is almost always an low Freon charge.

While I am late in chimming in, I had a good experience with Polar Bear, rebuilding my compressor.

Do keep us in the loop on this !

    We will be wondering:

    1) Does it work as well as expected ?

    2) Did the dealer have an exchange unit on hand ?

    3) Down time involved ?

    4) Charges ?

I had my dealer sent my AC compressor unit to Polar Bear.
They got it turned around in a couple of days, very fast.
The rebuild was under $400, cheap compared to what they wanted for a new unit !
It is installed and all put back together.
The car is now at the body shop to have some front end rock chips taken care of.
Should be getting it back by next Tuesday or Wednesday.
Thanks to everyone for your help. Don't know what I would have done otherwise.
This is the best place to come when your dealer don't have a reasonable solution.

Now I have just gone through replacing my AC compressor on my '95 456GT. Polar Bear was my saviour in the end.

It was taken to the dealer, they took it off and said they would take it to someone they knew local to see if they could repair it. 2 days later, no they couldn't. The dealer then informed me that they could send it to a place down east for a complete rebuild, cost$1375. I'm in the auto parts field, and I get along great with my dealer, so they gave me the old compressor and I sourced one myself.

As per my parts catalog, there are 2 different compressors that it can be, depending on Assy #. I have an earler car, so mine is a Sanden SD7H15. OEM from Ferrari is $3900 cdn. I went to Polar Bear, long story short after a few emails, $289 plus shipping. Joe there was great to del with. The only thing is the OEM compressor has a 6 groove pulley, Polar Bear did not have that. Instead of wasting time to send mine down and have the pulley changed out properly, they sent it with a 8 groove pulley. It works fine, I just had to space the cover for the compressor and altenator out at bit.

Now this is how great my dealer is, my car sat on a hoist and tied it up for 2 weeks.....no charge. Also since I sourced my own part, they didn't make anything off of the part.

It's in the car now, got my Braden pipes installed, and I'm ready for summer.

Scott, the OEM compressors for our 550's are the Harrison V5, variable capacity type compressor. This type compressor works by leaving the clutch engaged all the time (unless interrupted by the trinary switch), and varying the capacity of the unit via a bypass valve.

Where did you find that our cars are equipped with a Sanden SD7H15? This is a fixed capacity type compressor, which works by cycling the clutch on/off.

It would be interesting if you could confirm whether your compressor is actually a Sanden, as it would mean that someone replaced the OEM Harrison unit and managed to get the system to work, even though the control schemes are entirely different for the two types.

Thanks Taz, and further, I didn't realise that the early 456's were equipped with fixed displacement Sanden compressors, and thought all 456's were equipped with the same Harrison compressors as the 550's/575's/612's. But I just had a quick read of the WSM for the early 456 and sure enough, it mentions Sanden and their model number.

It's interesting that Ferrari (actually Diavia) used compressors with two different technologies and control schemes, then apparently discontinued the Sanden solution in favor of the Harrison for the subsequent 456's, 550, etc. Ricambi mentions Assy 20878 as the changeover point; would someone know what model year that corresponds to?

Skipp- Send me an e-mail at [email protected] and I will send you the phone number for my techs, who are La Scuderia. They should be able to give you a run-down on the 328. I have seen her, but did not pay much attention.

I have. My compressor was working perfectly, but had a small leak. Asked Ferrari of San Francisco to send the compressor to Polar Bear for rebuild. They rebuilt it using OEM parts but after using it for a few minutes I heard a strange noise coming from it. Had Ferrari of SF remove and send it back to them. Talked to Joe on the phone to find out what happened. He said "something came loose inside. Don't know how. Never happened before. It's like an act of God." They rebuilt and shipped it at their cost but refused to pay the cost of taking it out a second time, replacing the drier, flushing the system, and reinstalling it again. Wouldn't recommend them a all.

Are you sure the dealer is telling you the whole story? Maybe they are getting double the labor? Bill polar bear, then dealer bills you? Find out..call polar bear direct.

I did talk with Joe at Polar Bear and quoted him in my post above. He admitted that something get loose inside and broke other parts inside the compressor and did the second rebuild and shipping both ways at his cost. He wouldn't do that had he not confirmed it was their own lousy work that caused the failure. However he refused to own up and pay for the costs incurred by their customer due to their poor quality work.

Apparently the parts are readily available now, including an improved front seal. My techs are rebuilding my compressor at my next annual.

Who does the best job rebuilding the variable Harrison compressors now in the US? My 612 needs a rebuild. Thanks!
