    OK, sorry if this is one of those "damn why don't you do a search first thread"? I tried, but did not have any luck. So here are my questions;

I have a 2008 Spider 33K miles, complete service records, red with tan interior. Car is in great shape without any issues. What should I expect to pay to trade for a 2012 458 (red) 458 Italia?

Is there any considerable differences in a 458 between the years 2010 to 2014?

    Hi Chris,

Can’t help you with the first question, as it is very market dependable and I’m not based in North America.

    Regarding your second question, to my knowledge, no differences whatsoever, except;

    1) 7 year free maintenance program
    2) Exhaust backfire, crackles and pops gone.

Both starting in 2012 (March? May?) until end of production.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Well these are the only recent Manheim sales of 2007, 2008, 2009 spiders. With your mileage you can probably peg trade-in value (which will be less than auction value) somewhere around $75-80k.

    7/12/19 $90,000* 19,854 - - - -/- - - - Regular Southeast Fort Lauderdale
    5/7/19 $110,000* 7,029 - - NON/- - Black Regular West Coast California
    2/21/19 $83,500* 17,709 3.7 8G/A Red Regular West Coast Riverside
    1/24/19 $98,500* 11,360 4.6 8G/A Blue Regular West Coast Riverside
    1/8/19 $81,000* 23,103 4.2 8G/A Gray Regular Southeast Orlando
    12/13/18 $103,750* 10,622 4.6 8G/A Black Regular Southeast Palm Beach
    11/28/18 $85,500* 29,410 3.6 8G/A Black Regular Southeast Palm Beach
    10/18/18 $96,000* 18,647 4.4 8G/A Red Regular West Coast Riverside
    10/9/18 $102,900* 21,132 - - 8G/A Red Regular Southeast Fort Lauderdale
    9/6/18 $105,000* 13,162 4.5 8G/A Black Regular West Coast Riverside

458's seem to be ranging from $150 - $200 depending on year, mileage, a lot of factors. So you're probably looking at $75-$125k. My experience with trading cars is they always want more $$$ than I expect to pay.

I believe 2010 and 2011 models had some early transmission problems that could be expensive if not already fixed.

    Mark,

As far as I know, problems can occur in any 458 regardless of year of manufacture. Post 2012 cars were also affected, as well as Californias, FFs and F12s. Seen all of them at my dealer at one point or another.

No proof so far the failures can be traced to a particular model year, or other definitive cause. Same with the reports of failing brakes in 458s and 488s.

Also, as described in many other threads, “transmission issues” are, in reality, speed sensor failures inside the Getrag gearbox.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Ok, I thought I had read that somewhere. I know we were looking at Californias earlier this year for my wife and were told be a dealer to avoid the earlier years for that reason.

I did nearly the same thing in October of last year. I had a 2007 F430 coupe red/tan with 14k miles on it. I got $93k for it. I traded for a 2012 458 coupe red/tan CPO for $183k. Granted that was 10 months ago and coupes and not spiders, etc. but hopefully that at least gives you one reference point.

One very important difference between early 458s 2010-2011 and later models is that the later comes with something that you can add OEM for a lot of money to the earlier ones called "handling pack" and this only is worth going for the later models of the 458s = 2012 and onwards.

The difference is noticeable especially the gearbox being less lurky and more snappy and faster (talking from first hand experience from my previous 458 which was a 2011 with the upgraded handling pack).

    From Ferrari:
New control software for the magnetorheological dampers – developed to improve body control and boost tyre performance for an even sportier feel, the new control software is active in all of the manettino settings with specific calibrations.

Evolved F1 dual-clutch transmission control software – now delivers more emphatic gear-shifts when the manettino is in the RACE, CT OFF and ESC OFF settings. The new software features a strategy that utilises the energy built up during gearshifts by the twin clutches to provide positive acceleration when the next gear engages. The extra acceleration is felt only on up-shifts and is not available in the AUTO mode.

Recalibrated F1-Trac - guarantees that the 458 Italia is faster coming out of corners when the manettino is in RACE. In the power-on phase coming out of bends, the new calibration ensures more accurate control of the torque being delivered to the rear wheels. The aim in this instance is to achieve and maintain the maximum performance possible from the tyres in the available grip conditions. Smoother, more fluid torque delivery on the very limit of road-holding guarantees that the car is faster coming out of bends.

To sum it up, go for the later models without a doubt, the price and the difference in driving joy you will feel makes up for it easily. If you miss the cracks and pops and burbles talk to @MaseEngineering and they will help you flash them back just for a fraction of the cost of the handling pack.

I wish though that MaseEngineering could find a way to flash our gearbox as well?

Great and very informative post as always, Ash!

You’re right of course, but I think pre-2012 models can also receive the upgrade upon request. If memory serves me correctly, a while ago, members reported their cars upgraded, at the expense of lost exhaust backfire (which, as you correctly point out, can be restored), when they brought their cars for the yearly scheduled maintenance, even if they didn’t ask for it, which prompted other owners (such as myself) to leave an explicit written order to not upgrade the ECU.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.
