I’m really struggling with which to pick. I love the design of the 5970 case and pushers but the chapter ring and numbers outside make the dial slightly busy to me. On the other hand the 5204 looks slightly “cleaner” but has the same apertures the 5270 has (I’ve got one of them as well) which I’m mixed on... certainly a nicer function but it’s another thing on the dial. The double split feature is beautiful and nearly clinches it when coupled with the pusher through the crown, but I’m just not sure. Like most of you I think the 5970 is already an icon and who knows where the newest split will end up in history. To further complicate it, ALS double splits are an incredible value in the secondary market and in the same league as PP as far as I am concerned, so maybe a 5970 plus the 404.035 is in order. Now how to sell my wife on that idea is something even more complicated than picking another watch in the first place...
It’s cool but not used to the flash yet. Have you gotten used to yours? I may put the black strap on.
damn. I can't believe how these went through the stratosphere. Even the black ones have doubled in ask.
Image Unavailable, Please Login Yes. I have mine. Have the orange strap. Have not done the black strap yet. I like it a lot. The size is great.
Patek has always treated me well. Over the years they gave me a number of rare pieces all for MSRP : 5131g, 5976, 5740, 5975 etc. no games played.
Same. I always paid msrp for mine. Had to wait for a few pieces but I’m always near the top of the list for any piece. It helps that I’ve been buying from the same dealer for 25 years.
Economy is overheated right now. There is a bubble in the Patek market. A few years ago they had nautilus sitting in the display cases. they couldn't give them away. All of a sudden its the hottest watch on the planet. Things will change- things will settle and hopefully normality returns. For now, I'm very selective in what I buy and usually there is one piece at Baselworld that catches my eye. This year its the Handgrenade- the green Aquanaut. Prior to that was the5968. Im a tall big guy and generally prefer larger watches so I love the trend of Patek introducing more 42mm pieces. Anything smaller I have no interest in. I hope they come out with a 42mm calatrva - similar to the 5522 which I own. These are luxury goods and no one needs a Patek- but literally I stopped buying anything else other than a Patek as I find them to be massively superior to anything else out there.
Yeah I remember seeing the SS Nautilus in the mid 20s? They had a case of them. Now the Patek boutique and the Tourneau PP section both have so few watches on display in empty cases, it looks like they are going out of business (Rolex too)... I've wanted a white gold Calatrava [like a 5116, 5119 or 5120] since law school a "life goal" watch. For the last few years I've sat on the fence about it. The older ones are pretty small, even though I have thin wrists now.
just call some ADs. get a "relationship" going. if you buy something for your wife and yourself, its amazing how watches magically appear. Its a sucky way to do business but it its what it is. Till the economy cools, the dealers are in the drivers seat.
i dont get the nautilus trading at a premium - how much were 5970g when they came out? which pateks trade at the biggest premium and whats the spread?
I dont get the whole nautilus craze either. Or the Aquanaut. I love my 5968 and I paid msrp for it- but they are supposedly trading for 95k. I had da 5980- didnt wear it much- sold it for 40k. they are now selling for 125k. nuts!
Agree. It’s insane. I like the 5968 but at retail... not double it. You’re into grand complications watches for $90+ which are historically where the collectors gravitate.
