I have a '89 328 that WILL shift gears through all the gates while the car is off, but once the car is started it WILL NOT engage any of the gears.

The car oddly shut down on a drive and I coasted in neutral into my driveway. It initially would not restart and I thought I had an alternator issue, but now it starts just fine but will not engage any gears once started.

    Any ideas?

OP - If you put the car in 1st gear with the engine not running, clutch pedal depressed, and try and start it, does the coachwork lurch forward? (Make sure you've got room in front of you in case it does lurch forward.) Would be a sign the clutch is not disengaging correctly.

Had it towed to a specialty shop. Waiting to hear their assessment.

Clutch makes sense as my initial thoughts of alternator were linked to what I thought was an electrical smell, but now in hindsight it was clutch

    Definitely a clutch problem.
The fixing cost won't be a drama.
