There is a light bezel in center of dashboard labeled "slow down", never comes on, doesn't show in owner's manual. What is it?

It indicates that the cat is overheating.

It should illuminate when you turn the key on initially to indicate that it is functioning correctly. If it doesn't, it isn't. It is clearly shown/explained in my 328 manual but maybe not in the 308?

Did your car have a Cat originally from the factory? If it didn't, maybe all cars had a slow down light in the dash because the dashes were standard but if there was no cat on the car, maybe there was no circuitry to activate it for that market. I'm just speculating on that, I have no idea about the various laws in effect in the various countries at the time and what Ferrari did. But it seems odd there is a slowdown light and no explanation in the manual - even if the manual just said something like: "Not applicable in [wherever]"

If you want to see it in action, just reverse a couple of plug wires... ahem.
