:) the intention is that we get a balanced view.

Would be interesting to see if it was originally a GL4 spec oil, but this AGIP SX is GL4 & 5. !!!

I wonder what’s Rifledriver has to say about all this. He is the Ferrari specialist guru that also highly suggested to use the MTL for the 3x8.

The quote in my prior post was the Rifledriver quote.

He's my mechanic. Not exactly just "some mechanic in the US" for sure.

What he has to say about this is this is the exact reason he left these forums. Too many "experts" willing to voice their opinion never having pulled apart transmissions and looked at the real evidence. This is the exact reason he's no longer here.

But he's local, so I'm cool with that :)

I understand his leaving but, at the same time, I wish he had managed to ignore the "arguers" and just treat them as background noise. It's a shame his expertise is no longer available. :(

In my 12 years on this forum, I pretty much adopted the philosophy: "Rifledriver says to use [whatever product/maintenance technique/parts], why are we still discussing it?" :)

I think also people started attacking his "gruff" nature - he was very blunt and to the point which rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Actually the opposite in person - very nice, and takes the time to explain all the components, their function, and why he has to replace "that" one.

Likewise - I got him to replace the engine oil while I had the car in for the WUR. Didn't ask what he would put in - just trust him to use the right products.

A simple Search of this 308/328 sub-forum category will bring forth numerous past threads which discuss this exact same gearbox oil topic. Brian (Rifledriver), as well as many others, has been very clear in his comments about the use of this or that type of oil.

Rather than to re-invent this wheel again with the same old pros and cons, might we suggest some archive reading for those who still have questions?

Please tell me what size Stetson you wear and i'll buy you one, if they can make it big enough.

You wouldn't recognise a expert if it punched you on the nose and you have the audacity to critique others on this forum when you cannot even change the oil in your own car ....do me a favour

Many don't post on this forum because of people like you and especially Mr Gruff, that's a big shame.

Dont forget to switch the lights off when you leave

I,am UK based for the service stuff and tend to do lub changes myself as I have an inspection pit .
Been using basic Halfords 75/90 GL 5 in the gearbox / transaxle but change often every year and 2000/3000miles .
Works fine smooth shifts and easy cold 2nd gear when cold .
As said by Brandon ^^^ there’s other factors in the synchro stiffness not just the oil .
How ever if I can add to the debate this ......I think it all gets very hot down there in the transmission box , hotter than a typical rear gearbox set up on a traditional car .So I suspect there’s a big factor of heat degradation going on .This is as well as the above talked about “ shear “ and none hypoid teeth argument re GL 4 and GL 5 choice .

So as long as it can cope with the excess heat it will be ok .

Been doing a few Alpine rally’s , up hill climbs , hairpins etc and noticed the temps ( obviously in August ambient air temp 28/32 degrees ) rising .Both water and the oil temps .
Of course they drop back once the loads removed ie flat or descending a pass .But never the less the oil in the engines is cooled by the LHD duct and it’s little rad .That engine oil cooling is important.Often overlooked .
Because the engine is sat on top fwd it’s temp is conducted to the transaxle and vice versa .
The water jacket cools the cylinders and head but does not bring or see much in the engine oil temp .
I realise the engine and transaxle oil should have no connection from a fluid POV , but nether the less they conduct heat to one and other .Indeed the trans cases are finned underneath.
So I reckon the reason both GL 4 ( MTL ) and GL5 other brands seem to work with different folks is the fact they hold up under extreme temps .Perhaps MTL is very stable at high temps hence its anecdotal success .
It’s the extreme temp durability that probably more important than any lab “ shear “ loading tests .

Sorry just looking at all this from another POV of everybody’s right .........but why !

"Many don't post on this forum because of people like you and especially Mr Gruff, that's a big shame."

I have to admit I feel strongly both ways re this (and about thread hijacks!) ;)

I admit that it can be difficult if a person is an expert in some area and folks who are not are arguing with that person about a subject. It takes a certain amount of tolerance and understanding to deal with that on the part of the expert because on line anybody can say anything they want and sometimes, things are said with the specific purpose of inciting discontent/bad feeling. It you are a particle physicist at Fermi Labs, for example, and someone who read some wikipedia articles about the subject is arguing with you on an internet particle physics forum, it could get a bit annoying... :(

OTOH, the expert can simply stand on his/her "credentials" and essentially ignore the comments/arguments, other than point out their relevant experience. It doesn't take long for folks to figure out who the experts or "useful contributors" are and who are not. It seems to me that making that experience clear and letting other decide is more helpful than "taking my ball and going home."

Oh well, we all do what we do! :)

Don't be so sensitive Tony. Perhaps take a few deep breaths, and maybe a few days away from the internet would do you good. You seem a bit worked up and over stressed. Best of luck.

I know that they didn't have to remove the sump cover (the finned aluminum cover) to do the linkage adjustment. It was all adjusting the shift rods and how the lever lines up in the gate.

Redline is not available in my country and Last week an agent of ENI advice me to use: Eni Rotra LSX 75W-90 ( as the replacement of Agip Rotra SX SAE 75W/90 )
    I used 4.5 liters.
Anybody else using Eni Rotra LSX 75W-90 ?

I think its more if your shifting issues are consistent and don't change with temperature, check your linkages. If it does change with temperature, check your oil.
