i bought the leather (all the interior stuff) from HVL to obtain the correct grain for the period. IT is VM3171 color, and is surface dyed. Im not sure how to answer this, is was pretty workable to obtain a smooth even look however it is on the thicker side of leather. I can get a sizing if needed. We did decide to have the welting material sliced to a thinner thickness so that the welt bead would not be so large, especially around the door games, back of the seats etc. That processed worked great.

I have restored several other GTC cars and the client chose to use Garrett Leather - and it is much softer to the feel. I was told by an upholster that Garrett leather (or at the least the ones the client chose) was more like "couch leather" substantially soft and is subject to easy stretching and easy wear. I do not put my leather in that category, as mine has a similar feel but you can tell it has substantial more strength to it. One thing with surface dyed vs the VAT dyed, when u make a cut and have to fold it, the real leather hide color exposes itself and does not make for a nice job. To get around this, i had a sample of the leather sent to "leatherique" and they color matched a quart of vm3171 color dye that i used on any exposed seams and end cuts and dyed those edges, turned out perfect.

Hope this answered your question, if not give me a call Lowell and we can talk more.

One more thing - your upholster has to know how to sew without bunching up the material....that is experience.

Didn't realize that was Brad's old car; I remember it as light beige. Brad came from Texas to SoCal for my 90th a few years ago.

Yes he owned it briefly - was a non running car at the time, bought it from Curley out of pittsburg and then shortly later sold it to Clairence Daniels - who kept it from 1975 - 2016 . Black i believe was the color at the time.
