There are a few threads on the topic but most a bit old. I have seen recommendations about using something like hylomar (thin bead) on bold sides of the gasket and surrounding the stud holes.

Any thoughts on what's best? Dry? Hylomar? Permatex?

    Thanks!

Hylomar Blue worked for me on the engine oil pan and gearbox pan. Almost two years and no leaks.

I used Loctite 574 Flange Sealant which is an anaerobic sealant. It came recommended to me from the vintage BMW crowd. Its nice because it doesn’t form “worms” like does RTVs.

It needs to be gear oil compatible

I have used Permatex MotoSeal for years on engines from Norton Commandos to DD 8V71TI's and everything in between. It is a solvent-based material. Works great, no insoluble squeeze-out to get into wrong places and it does not glue the parts together. It's pretty much all I use unless some specific sealant chemistry is required for a particular job.

Honestly. I used the bare green gasket 16,000 miles ago on both pans and my garage floor is dry. Just saying....

The common wisdom I have heard here is that while it looks like there are leaks with the pans/studs, the oil is coming from higher up (ie shift shaft seals, cam seals, etc.).

It's easy enough to determine with a dye test if the oil is coming from higher up.

No sealant..not needed. Clean it real good and button her up. TORQUE THE PAN FASTENERS!! In a criss cross pattern to 8-10nm from center out.

I agree that in theory, no sealant is necessary with a gasket unless specifically called for. But in the real world, mating surfaces often don't mate as well as they should (or did when new). To emphasize the previous post, when this occurs, it is often due to improper tightening - usually overtightening - that distorts the parts/mating surfaces.
