Funny, but not even close...the '65 El Camino was wide and the overall proportions of the front very nice. The only reason the "spindle" shape exists is to fit around the headlights.

And I agree, awesome car, absolutely love it, but it's a horrible design.

I also picked up this awesome book of automotive fine art :)D) and a couple new mugs! I talked to one of the designers from the book, Ken Vendley, and he was saying that when he was in school (1960) everyone wanted to be Syd Mead, who was about a year ahead of him. I told him that everyone in my class (1988) wanted to be Syd Mead also. He seemed surprised by this! Image Unavailable, Please Login

Syd Mead & the Pontiac illustrations from Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman were the 'bible' for rendering/illustrations for a generation of designers.

Does anyone know if an art critic has ever attempted to quantify on a percentage basis how much exaggeration is typically seen in these illustrations? Looks to me like the widths may be pushing 7% wider than life. For example, this Pontiac looks like it could seat 4 across in the front seat.

I guess it had to happen someday, but I don't think I would want to be the one putting this out there for all to see (**** on)......

In several conversations I had with Mr. Fitzpatrick he said they ‘cheated’ them till they looked good. Don’t know if they ever had a mathematical formula.

That is a strangely horrible Photoshop job (meaning the quality of PS, not the quality of the design) Besides that, he ruined the car. I'm not too up on American cars from the seventies, but that rear fender is off of some Pontiac. And touching the roofline of the Daytona is a huge mistake.

Big day today for retro designs of famous and 'beloved' supercars of yore.....
The new Alfa Montreal Vision concept.......

For the most part more successful than the "Daytona" concept, but still a bit OTT for my taste......I'll take a nicely kept original, thank you!

Side note: I still recall tootling along the autostrada between Milano and the Swiss border in a rented 8 pax Ford van full of high school kids on a European tour back in 1972; after a lengthy buildup, I finally got up enough speed to pass a lorry on a slight uphill stretch; only to see madly flashing lights coming up behind me shockingly quickly. As I pulled back into the right lane a bright lime green Montreal screamed past at what I assumed to be 200kph.....the kids in the back just about freaked out, most had never even seen a car going that fast, let alone one turning probably 7500 rpms!
    Ah, youth......(theirs & mine.........)

They took all the cool things about a Montreal and threw them away. Reminds me of this- Image Unavailable, Please Login
Am I being overly negative today? I don't think so :D
