Somehow I can't wrap my head around the title of this GP. When I read Emirates I'm thinking it's the Abu Dhabi GP. A GP in TX should be sponsored by a TX company.

    Same here !
We have an Emirates Stadium in London where Arsenal football club plays; that sounds weird.
That show you the footprint the Arabs have in the Western world.

U.S. Grand Prix: Ricciardo to wear Longhorns helmet in Austin for U.S. Grand Prix
    3:13 PM PT

AUSTIN -- The Formula One paddock hosts a lot of serious business during a race weekend, but this is a place for some of the lighter-hearted stories in the build-up to the U.S. Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas.

It's not unusual for F1 drivers to mark their favourite race with a one-off helmet design, but never before has someone carried the colours of the local college football team.

This weekend Daniel Ricciardo is doing exactly that by painting his crash helmet in the colours of the Texas Longhorns, bearing the Austin-based university's famous orange logo. The front is designed to look like grill of the helmet and the rear carries Ricciardo's number -- 3 -- and his name.

"The long and short of it is: I love Austin," Ricciardo said. "The first year we visited here, I fell in love with the place, the people and the atmosphere; it speaks my language!

"Last year, I finally went to a Texas Longhorns game and it was an awesome experience so I thought this year I'd tip my hat to them. "I normally try and do something Austin themed here and I thought the Longhorns was a cool one with the idea to do a Football helmet; it's pretty special and I'd like to show some love to the city!"

For the sake of consistency and to make it easier to identify them on track, F1 drivers are allowed one change of helmet design per year under the regulations.

This article will be updated throughout the week.

I think the Ricciardo helmet thing is cool and all, but didn't he already use the one shot for the Aussie GP with the Jack Brabham early 60's throwback (which I mistook for Pedro circa 1970)? Or was that last year...?

I'm surprised by the poor condition of the circuit. I will be curious to hear drivers comments after the practice is over

And that lacklustre Hamilton just made it to 8th. Pfft. Stick a fork into him. He is done. He should retire on the spot. :D

Yeah, I am surprised to hear that. Many drivers say it's quite bumpy in places. Magnussen even says "jumpy" at Turn 9.
It's a relatively new track, it's not like it's worn out after years of use, so what's the problem?
Other series that race there don't complain about the track ?

I never understood the helmet rule to begin with. Who cares if they change helmets each race?

Stupid rules I agree; some of them from the time Bernie was running F1 - he was a bit OCD.

Several lap times disallowed because of track limit enforcement.
Vettel managed a practice spin for good measure, so everything is in order for Sunday I guess.
What happens to Perez? Stroll is way ahead of him.
Not a good session for Williams or Haas.
Apart from that, Ferrari seems worried about the pounding their gearbox take over the bumps.

what? There is a rule limiting the number of helmets...limiting the amount of safety equipment?

I know it's the rule, but I think the FIA is going too far. One can hardly see the helmets when the cars are moving anyway.

A few years back, BAR (remember them) got into trouble because they wanted to change the livery on their cars mid-season.
