Hi... so with the help of another F-Chatter we set out to change the shift shaft seals today.. (all now completed) however when we removed the gearbox plug there were 3 items attached to the magnet. We still have the gearbox sump removed...

Can any one tell me what these parts are? what they do? do i have a major problem? The small casting looks like it may been broken for some time looking at the broke surface.

I''ve been driving the car with no problems changing gear...?

    Appreciate any advice.. thanks

When you took the tranny pan off were all the springs and balls accounted for?

Here it is. Check the parts book for the layshaft parts in the transmission.
I don't know how urgent or serious it is, but these sure look like they are your mystery parts.

Those are spring-loaded pins to keep the dogteeth centered and balanced in the middle of the slider as the synchro ring slides in and out. Having one falling out to the bottom of the gearbox means you have a rebuild coming. Drive this at your own risk. If one of these things finds its way into the middle of the gears, it's major damage.

I have never seen that happen but it is only a matter of time before it gets stuck in a gear or prevents selection of a gear. It was quite common on earlier Testarossas until a redesign was done. It needs to be removed and fixed. Park it.

Thanks, is this a weakness of the gearbox? will it only cause damage if another fails and get clogged?

I am into Porsche gearboxes as well and I have never seen those pins used on dogteeth. It seems to be a bad thing.

One of the few benefits of Porsche style syncros is they also perform as a detent for the slider. Not always a good thing. Many, possibly most transmissions use the same idea of the Ferrari trans and it works quite well. For those to break in any but early Testarossa transmissions is very rare.

assuming that just one has broke, should I be driving the car? is it putting stress on the remaining parts?

No. It is not a question of stressing other parts. It is a question of getting stranded in a known broken car and having the unaccounted for part damaging really expensive and very hard to find parts because you chose to ignore the warning sign the broken parts are trying to give you.

    I already said it.....PARK IT.

Rod, You only found one half of the broken "T" piece. If the car was shifting ok with just two remaining it should be ok but if that other half comes out and gets between gears it could get expensive quickly. I would at least take the pan off again and go fishing with a magnet and stiff bent wires to try to find it before driving or pulling the drivetrain.

    Hell. NO.

Don't drive it, at all. Not even onto a towtruck bed or lift. Engine off, put it in neutral and push it if it has to be moved.

Rod, park it until you fix it. The way it is now, it's already a pretty big bill. You don't want to go inside a gearbox (engine out) and just put these pins back without replacing some syncros, dogs, sliders and any worn gear. I cannot speak for the UK, but in the US, this is going to start at $5k. If you drive it and a piece gets into a spinning set of gears, you can multiply that by 2x very quickly.

Park. Big metal bits rolling around inside the case? You really don't need us to tell you it's a bad idea to operate the car. Tow it to a shop and have the work done. Otherwise a $5K bill will be a $10K bill.

Get repaired ASAp. If not, more parts to fall, which means more damage. Guaranteed.

100% agree, push it, but don't drive it. Don't even start it again. I have rebuilt many and so far, it is only expensive, much longer and it will get REALLY expensive.
