wondering what the differences are between the 2.7 cradle and the 5.2 cradle? thinking it might be as innocuous as an E brake mounting tab....??? or, is there some major difference that would render it inadvisable to swap one with the other?

No major differences. The 2.7 version is more prone to cracking at the upright of the shock mounting points and that is where the 5.2 version is beefed up.

No. They use thicker stock material.

The mounting tab for the upper wishbones is slightly different on the 5.2s. It’s buttressed.

There is a thread about it from recently with pics.

We found that there are additional gussets on later 5.2's as well.

^^^^^^ thanks for that link, and the info

I have "heard" that the cradle is inherently a weak component and susceptible to a variety of issues.
anyone want to comment on that "rumor?"

The only weakness is the tendency to crack at the driver side upper support. I have not seen any other weakness. It is held to the main frame with 20 bolts. I don't know if I would call that weak. What are the rumors saying?

what I have heard, I don't understand: that the metal used is dirty (?)……. is of poor quality and does not take well to welding

Ah, you need to be a good welder. The thin metal is prone to blowing through but a good welder with gas will solve that.
