I am seeing a lot of different finishes for the restored horn trumpets and I am trying to figure out what is correct. I have original FIAMM horn trumpets which are pitted and do not have much finish left. The original finish looks like a dark candy apple red. I can't tell if it's painted or anodized, solid color or semi transparent, and whether the finish underneath is mirror polished or brushed originally.

Owner in 1973 of 1972 Dino 246 GT. The horn trumpet was just a medium shade of red. No chrome ,no candy apple.

    Chris,
What S/N is the car? It's likely they are the original semi-transparent candy apple paint. They polished the aluminum and painted it I believe, my L-series trumpets were pitted so we filled them and sprayed silver under the red.
Early cars through M-series(maybe?) had the candy apple finish, all black painted compressor.
My E-series #02750 has blue horns, pretty sure these were correct but not sure when the change happened nor what happened from 1972 on.
The horn models/colors are probably documented in the compendium but I don't have it handy.

Nicely done. I happen to have a few sets of NOS horn assemblies on the shelf (not cheap) and I can say without a doubt that the original finish are a transparent 'candy' red over the silver of the aluminum beneath.

I guess you're missing the point. This is a 206/246 forum...blue may have been used on other Ferrari models (Daytona, as you point out), but not the Dino.

The Lancia Stratos also used the blue horns.

So I stand corrected...I have never seen blue horns on a Dino and perhaps I should've consulted the Compendium before posting...:(

Sometimes I think we need a sticky addendum to the Compendium for all the little things we keep finding out about the Dino.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Matthias sent out an (annual?) update to the Compendium to everyone who purchased a copy. Of course, it should be in electronic form to lessen the pain he'd have to go through. But it would be a great way to communicate corrections and added info learned since the book came out. Or it could be posted either to his site or here.

    No corrections needed.
Matthias stayed over at my house after The Dino Rally and we had some good discussions, there is no Compendium update planned is what I heard. It was intended as a look into rare factory data and observations made by an informed author rather than as a restoration guide for all readers.

BTW, Compendium is sold out, you either are lucky to have one or you aren't.
The sheer amount of work and volume of effort/info put into the Compendium make it impressive on its own and I thank MB for the years of effort to document it and enthusiasm for The Dino that it spreads across the world.

Ron, we're taking the 2021 Dino Rally to the North Coast of CA after the Monterey weekend, please consider joining us.

BTW, Blue horns on E series 05702

    Hi Guys,
If you go to dino-book.com and click on the 'Updates' option that appears in the Rosso Dino ribbon just below the header, there are ten listed already.

However, after reading Scott's post, it appears that there likely will be none to follow.
    Cheers,
    Coop

I'll bet we don't hear from MB for a while.

Matthias told me he is in the middle of a custom built home where contractors need to be babysat daily as there are many special "Dino options" for the house (aka Dino shrine).

He showed me the layout photos and initial build up pics and the whole house looks like an upscale version of The Dino Compendium book!
Best wishes for success in this custom build.
