The best battle was Lewis and Max in Hungary.

Lewis Hamilton has come out on top of yet another poll after being voted the best Formula 1 driver of 2019 by his fellow peers.

15 out of the 20 drivers that made up the 2019 grid cast their votes anonymously, with Sebastian Vettel, Charles Leclerc, Kimi Raikkonen, Valtteri Bottas and Hamilton himself not taking part.

Hamilton had already been voted the best driver in a team principals’ poll and now the other drivers have agreed with that verdict.

Max Verstappen was runner-up to Hamilton with Charles Leclerc rounding off the top three.

Sebastian Vettel did not feature as high on the drivers’ list compared to the team principals’ top 10 as Carlos Sainz, Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris were all deemed to have had better seasons than Vettel.

It is clear that George Russell is very highly regarded as he made the top 10 even without scoring a single point throughout the 2019 World Championship season.

Completing the top 10 was Pierre Gasly, who was able to show signs of bouncing back straightaway from his demotion at Red Bull.

    Drivers’ top 10 in full:

    1 Lewis Hamilton
    2 Max Verstappen
    3 Charles Leclerc
    4 Carlos Sainz
    5 Valtteri Bottas
    6 Daniel Ricciardo
    7 Lando Norris
    8 Sebastian Vettel
    9 George Russell
    10 Pierre Gasly

Max and Leclerc at Red Bull ring was great, RB at their home track and Honda's first win added to the drama. Also Lewis and Leclerc at Monza was great

It's a crying shame that Russell can't get hold of a car worthy of his talent; he could probably achieve a lot more in a good team.
I understand he signed at Williams for 3 years, but at this rate, that could be his undoing.
Unless there is a drastic change of fortune at Williams, I can see no team willing to recruit Russell at the end of 2021, after 3 years at the back of the field.

He will need a team to buy him out of Williams. Russell to Mercedes if Bottas is released possibly??

My guess is that as long as Bottas is finishing 2nd in WDC he can stick around as long as he wants.

Bottas would be foolish to rock the boat at Mercedes; no other team will give him a car good enough to win the occasional GP.

True-- surely the Mercedes Management must consider a future beyond LH. Bottas is a fine driver, unless he improves significantly the future is not with him is it?

Right now, Bottas is an excellent #2.
It remains to be seen, after his pending divorce, whether he can muster the skills and stamina to become a #1.
