Steve: All the #9000 series GTB/C cars, were built with the unique air cleaners. They were meant to race with these units, but far too many have been lost over the years. By the time we owned #9041 in 1977, it was one of only three or four that still had them. We sold the car in 1992, and it has apparently lost the air cleaner today.

Great information!!! Thanks, Dyke. I'd wondered about the "tall air cleaner" since reading about 09041 in your excellent Cavallino 275 GTB/C article.

Further Cavallino 199 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014 features the DWR46 comprehensive 275 GTB production list. The list covers all 275 GTB models from 06003 through 08979 some 10 pages! That last page also features a rare view of 06437 the Pininfarina Speciale that had many unique build characteristics not found on the Scaglietti production models.
The serial number list breaks down details like short nose, long nose 3 carb and 6 carb versions and steel or alloy bodies etc. The last column for Special Features has a number of unique details. I wonder if the intervening five years has uncovered any further details. Also if there will be an update published of the additional information found?

There is also the Gregor Fisken comparison of a short nose 07407 275 GTB"C" and long nose 09041 275 GTB/C editions in Cavallino 163 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2008.

CH: Amazingly, very little new has been brought to my attention. Any new info was published in Cavallino as "Letters to the Editor". I was pleasantly surprised to have gotten so much of it correct the first time!! Obviously I am sure all the data is not 100% correct, and various individuals may know more about certain cars today, as new information continues to be discovered.

It was a very impressive effort to compile that volume of detail for so many cars and John certainly gave you lots of space with ten pages to expound on the details! Though I have no doubt you could write a book or two on all the subtle details that the list covers in broad strokes...

Steve that story was in a 3 part series 275 Berlinetta featured in issue #48 of Cavallino December 1988 / January 1989.

Here is 275 GTB/C 09067 again pictured with a different kind of air filter for RM Sotheby's 2014 sale. Is this a genuine Ferrari supplied filter also?

The air cleaner shown on #9067 in post #61 is homemade.

It's stated in Ian Webb's Ferrari 275 book that the snorkels on the air filter help control air flow into the main cleaner, which itself acts as a plenum chamber, which improves throttle response and part throttle running.

Also stated is that the Webers, especially on the 4 cam, need the air cleaner to align the air flow. Without it the engine will not give clean running and good throttle response.

I wonder if when 275 GTB/C 09027 was restored by Ferrari Classiche, they fitted the air filter?

Steve: I disagree with both statements in your Post #64. When we tune the engines, we drive the cars without air cleaners to have easier access to the carburetors, and when we are done, we remount the air cleaners. They always run the same, slow or fast. Just because it is in print doesn't make it true.

I owned 275 GTB #7447. '65, 3 carb, 2 cam with snorkel cleaner. A friend had one a few serial numbers later with the "grilled" air cleaner. I didnt like the snorkel cleaner because it hid too much of the engine.
Also it had 40 DFI carbs. I always wondered if those were correct for my engine. All the numbers matched.

My 330 GT ser 2 has the snorkel type air cleaner and I've always thought how inefficient it must be, as the cross sectional area of the snorkels barely equals the intake area of the carbs, plus the shape and corners can't help, so I don't really go along with the idea that it is needed to improve the breathing. I'm more inclined to think that the snorkels on road cars are there to feed warm air off the exhaust manifolds to the carbs to eliminate carburetter icing and the performance loss due to hot air was not considered important. I would have thought that an aircleaner box that draws cold air via large trunking from the high pressure area in front of the radiator would have been much more effective. I've no doubt that would set the purists cringing!

This is 275 GTB 07045 of April 1965 a short nose, steel body version. Here after much has changed from the original color combination of Rosso 19374 over nero. Also originally a 6 carb version motor to. Now Rosso Rubino over light tan. Another pristine effort from DK Engineering!

Ferrari's web site states the 275 GTS as having 3 40 DFI/1 Weber carbs as well as 40 DCZ/6.

It states the 275 GTB as having 3 or 6 Weber DCN/3 carbs, but other spec Webers are know to have also been used on the Berlinetta.

Steve: The factory today has no clue what the factory did 50 years ago. The 275 Owners Manual mentions both 40 DCZ/6 and 40 DFI/1 carbs. I have never personally seen a 275 with 40 DFI/1 carbs that was documented as being that way from new, though there may be some. Early six carb GTB's used 40 DCN/3 units and late six carb cars used 40 DCN/9 units. Both version came with either 29mm or 32mm chokes.

There seems to be much switching between 3 carb and 6 carb version set ups. Could you ball park a price for each version sitting on the shelf restored - carbs and manifold? The 6 carb version is said to be quite valuable now.
    Thank you!
