So I've been looking to pick up one of these older cars and I was amazed at how well the 458 prices have held up.

It doesn't make sense unless the 488 really was a disappointment? I never bought one so I don't know. Anyone chime in here?

F12 is the best bang for your buck but the 488 coupes still have warranty and would seem the better buy over a 458?

The 458 is a far more enjoyable car to own and drive than the 488.

A lot of people on here will scream and cry about how the 488 is every bit as good as the 458, but what you see in used prices tells a different story. Also, it's not uncommon to see people going backwards from the 488 to the 458 - which is something that has not been seen since the days of people unloading their 348's to rebuy their 328's

I can't speak for everyone, but in my experience the 488 was a big disappointment. I took mine back to the dealer as soon as humanly possible and got rid of it.

I’m in absolutely no hurry to sell my 458. I’ve learned to ignore, downplay, or just live with its shortcomings, and enjoy it for the wonderful machine it is.

This seems to be a US thing, relayed by vocal advocates, the 458 being the "last NA".
In Europe the prices of the latest 458 (2014-2015) are close to the prices of the earlier 488 (2015) which just reflects the situation of the prices when new (in these good old days Ferrari introduced the new model at a price very similar to the outgoing one, the increase was minimal).
The 458 screams a lot more than the 488 but is also a lot slower (due to its power deficit, which is even more in real life than the 100hp of the data sheet because of the lack of mid-range torque).
The dual clutch transmission is equally brilliant in both (IMHO it was the real breakthrough of the 458).
I am actually in a minority here (not part of "a lot of people" ;) ) but I think the 488 is not "every bit as good as" the 458 but actually significantly better - in terms of impressing the neighborhood by ostentacious screaming it's certainly a let-down but personnally that's not what I look after when driving.
Of course the best way to make a choice is probably not to read internet posts (and presumably follow the most conformist view) but to drive both cars in different conditions and decide what suits best the personal priorities.

    This.

But I loved my 488. Yes it didn’t sound as good as the 458 but it’s a car. I bought it to drive. If I wanted superior sound, I’d lock my self in my home theater and crank up the tunes.

You cannot ignore 100hp increase. 458 has aged well and is a great car. 488 is just better.

I just got out of a real nice 2018 Porsche GT3 that screamed to 9k rpm. I test drove 458 and 488... the engine is only part of the experience for me. Yes the 458 sounds good but I bought a 488gtb.

I'd add that if a 488 can actually be bought for a 458 price then the 488 is a bargain ;)

It's not beating a dead horse if you are trying to decide which to buy. Then it's more a matter of serious decision making.

I don’t care which car you drive...458...488...f12...f8...430..GT3, 600lt...so forth...we all seem to love cars and that’s all that matters. There is cool aspects about them all.

I did my final track day back in early December at Sebring. There was a guy with a new Camaro ZL1...all fixed up for the track. Car looked and sounded mean and the guy drove it well. We talked a lot that day, didn’t matter what we were driving we were there for car, driving and friends

    Not always...

I actually didn't like my 458 for the first few weeks I owned it. It wasn't until I got everything into adjustment and had a chance to drive the car for the better part of a month that I really came to love it. Lowering the front a little also helped a lot.

Similar with the 488. I drove one at Laguna Seca for a few laps and then later decided to get one. But after owning it for several months, I realized it was just giving me a headache the more I drove it. By month 3, I stopped driving it completely and then finally a few months later I took it back to the dealer.

Of course, with the 812 all it took was a single test drive to fall in love :)
