Then you missed the 24 when Papis got his nickname "Mad" Max (1996). '150 mph down pit road at the end and turning laps
only 7 tenths off his pole time after 23 1/2 hours in the SP (FL (fast lap, 6 from the end)): Max Papis 30 Ferrari 333 SP 1:41,951 (lap 691) ........ :D

Today they had a qualifying session- to determine pit box and garage locations.
#3 Corvette was being heavily worked on afterwards so they must have had a problem.

4 of the 5 GTD Lamborghinis were disqualified for having the wrong gearing. Luckily the Roar .is only to determine garages and pit boxes.

Why would you run one gear set at the Roar, knowing you can’t legally run it in the race?

Only motivation I can think of is the qualifying for the garage and pit space. But with less than 40 cars this year, is that really a big deal?

Exactly. I would think accurate data from a legal car would be more valuable. It’s not like they’re way off pace and need to save face for sponsors.

If you haven't listened to it, check out the Marshall Pruett Podcast Inside the Sports Car Paddock for this week. Jeff Braun goes into a good bit of detail on how teams typically approach the Roar and what they are looking to get out of it.

Does any of it really matter? 'All BS hype for the ROAR and 24 "show". It all's evened out throughout the race itself by the BS yellows and what-not anyway.

Jacky and Jackie won Le Mans in '69 after qualifying only 13th, and starting dead last when Jacky walked across the track instead of running...….and that was prior to the BS "close the field for the show" antics.....REAL racing...… ;)

39 entries for the Rolex 24.

The loss of the Ganassi Ford GTs with no independent team taking up the slack, etc.,
less than 40 cars for the 24 Hours, have they ever seen such a small field?

Sebring could be back to 2006-07 levels when they had less than 30 entires total.

Doesn’t bode too well for the balance of the season.

    What is going on?

When Ganassi/Ford announced they were pulling out, there was much mention of independent teams taking up the mantle. So much for that at least for now.

That's the proof that the DPI and GTD cars are simply too expensive.
Less and less teams can afford to race them.
Grids of GT3 and GT4 series are full in Europe.

Oie yi-yi. It's deeper than that.

They cost comparatively nothing. What they cost now would have gotten you a 962 35 yeas ago.

Us die hard, real race fans, are losing interest and not drawing anyone new in. No audiences, no sponsors, no fields.
The more the BS gimmicks for the "show", the more, again real race fans, are leaving. ;)

Poverty. This is what happens when you want all the big name factory teams in your series. You send the cost into the stratosphere and there is NO ONE else to pick up the slack when the kids with the big check books and the R&D tax deductions leave town.

Which only supports my statement about IMSA of the 70's. More teams better competition and no one outside of a few well heeled illegal substance distributors had any real financial advantage over the others.

You kids are addicted to a substance. It's called OPM. And your running out of it !

Office of Personnel Management is a substance? That one can get addicted to??? :p

However, seriously, BMW spent a few million (a lot for IMSA participants at the time) to come over with the CSLs. 935s wer'nt cheap either, wuz they?........ ;)

As far as Daytona goes, one of the big differences this year is that we don't have many one off entries. Usually P2 and GTD have a number of teams entered just for the 24. That hasn't really happened this year.

DPi being down isn't a good sign. It was a class the rest of the world was watching. Hopefully the competition is better but I see ALMS type numbers at races that aren't part of the endurance challenge.

Is the Michelin Pilot Challenge down on numbers as well?
