That article is about the clear-felling of the site - NOTHING to do with fire breaks; look at the pic I posted, bush up to the fences on south and east sides.
So glad you and Julie are safe and I agree all the 'blame game' ******** is very unhelpful in such circumstances.
That's the whole point of the 10/50m rule to be able to clear trees without permission. Moving it up to 100/200m would mean clearing 100m of bush not have a 100 m fire break before you can start building. Also I only see the south side against bush and what looks like a house off Emu Mountain Rd so if that's private property obviously the land owner has no obligation to cut them down. Google maps suggests that vertical white line on the right is where the park actually starts. I did that last week. Left Sydney at 3pm on Friday and arrived in Dallas at 1.30pm the same day. I can report that, disappointingly, time travel seems to take forever though...
Update Our internet, power and phone went down again on Tuesday morning and came back on Thursday pm. We lost ANOTHER fridge load of food!!!. However today, Friday, was meant to be a catastrophe fire day for Narooma - but the weather has changed. The forecast on Wednesday PM from the RFS was north-west winds at 40kph starting Friday about 12pm. The fire-front is only 6kms away to the west and is about 100kms long so it was predicted it would hit in an hour. However I had found two excellent weather channels: https://www.windy.com/?-36.113,150.191,9 and https://ozforecast.com.au/cgi-bin/bushfire?fire=8525 which contradicted that information. I was told by RFS they were right and 'alternate' weather channels were wrong. On Thursday afternoon at the briefing Friday was downgraded. I cleared our western fenbceline and about 50metres into the next door paddock. Then it started to rain ... about 4mm which felt like 40 . Thursday night much more relaxed, this morning, Friday, is benign. I am quietly confident we will not have the fire-front at our doorstep. Attached are a couple of pics, not taken by me, one of the fire looking north towards Batemans Bay from Moruya (about 20kms away) on Saturday 4th Jan., a cloud like that was over us on Tuesday morning, new years eve. The other was taken by a friend in Cobargo on New years eve when he was going to Bermagui (turn right just after the bridge) As a veterinarian I am incredibly saddened by the death and destruction of the domestic and native animals in our area. Not only the direct effects of this fire which means basically triaging wild and domestic animals then pronouncing a death sentence in most cases, but in the months to come with no feed about. We are already seeing an influx of kangaroos and wallabies, which the resident ones on our property do NOT like, but the smaller ones such as echidnas and lace monitors who never made it. There will be very sad times ahead for those in bushfire affected areas for many months, if not years - I am already feeling down. A farmer friend has given a graphic description of the fire on his property, it appeared in the local paper. https://www.naroomanewsonline.com.au/story/6569673/the-tsunami-of-fire-that-wiped-out-everything-in-its-path/?cs=2708 Thanks to everyone who sent good wishes ... surprising how morale boosting that is. An interesting map just sent a few minutes ago https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/image/0017/161108/Potential-fire-spread-prediction-incl-embers-A0.png The one sent on January 4th showed the fire right up against the sea from Batemans Bay to Tathra, about 120kms
Sorry about the lost food Phil but so glad you are safe...just unbelievable the extent and intensity of these fires. Take care!
A little bit of good news at least. Just uploading that pic you posted. Image Unavailable, Please Login
