I am looking for some advice and / or discussion about the different oil manufactures and recommendation Pro's / Con's. The site has quit a few discussion about oil's viscosity with little about the pros and cons of manufactures. My interest is manufactures and how they compare to the recommended Shell Helix.

For example adding additional additives like additional Zinc. When I converted to Castrol Edge or Mobil 1 synthetic oil in my old muscle cars I have to add a Zinc additive to protect the cam and hydraulic lifters. This is because the manufactures removed the Zinc!

I am not concerned about the viscosity any good oil is available in the proper viscosity.
No one locally carriers Shell Helix.

Thinking of using Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge.

Mobil 1 0w-40 .. that is what I use and am happy.some Indies use that as well ..it has a good amount of anti wear additives

You can also easily find even in Amazon the ferrari approved Pennzoil 5w40

This topic has been beaten to death on the forum ..just do a search and you will get more information then you want ..:)

Zinc or the lack of it has not been an issue in Ferrari motors since the early 70's and high zinc didn't seem to help those. Any of the big name brand synthetic motor oils is a good product. Of all the things in our society there is more prejudice over motor oil brands than anything I can think of.

In my shop I have only used Redline or Mobile One for many years but mostly those because of availability. .

Brian- Same reason I use Valvoline full synthetic. You can get it anywhere and it is a great oil, like most of the modern synthetics.

Thanks everyone who responded - it is good to know I can use high quality oils available locally without having to mail order!

I believe Mobil One 15-50w has more anti friction than Mobil One 0-20w.

I would recommend the euro formula mobil 1 0w 40 .. 15 Is too thick imho ..unless you track it extensively

Extensive track use they actually suggested 10-60 but depending on oil temps seen and pressures encountered 50 would be OK too. I agree, too high for normal street use.

15-50 is too high and 0-20 is too low. Ferrari made a recommendation and there is no reason to vary from it.

In 32 years there have been a few changes in motor oils.

At that time the chemistry did not allow for as wide a viscosity range as we have now. Also what started out as 50 rapidly lost viscosity so its operating viscosity was lower rather quickly.

And last but not least the car we are speaking of is a 360, not a Testarossa. What is right for one is not always right for the other.

If we were speaking of a 250 my recommendations would be very different.

Let stick to the car in question. When there is a question for oil for a Tucker Torpedo we can talk about those then.

That document is pretty old...Mobil 1 0w-40 hasn't had BMWs LL-01 approval in several years...It was reformulated.

Didn't realize such a wide variation in oil recommendations for Ferrari's. I don't have much knowledge of other Ferrari's!

In general modern cars are designed around modern lubrication tech. Materials, machining methodology and conditions in modern motors either allows or dictates different oils. One size does not fit all. Even the use of synthetic vs Dinosaur oil enters into it.

I've used Castrol GTX 20w50 conventional oil in my 308 for the last 35 years. I know it's not that same as it was 35 years ago, but never had any problems. Of coarse I only drive that car a couple hundred miles a year, or less, these days.

Its still a good oil but in the alloy cylinder cars like yours I really believe we are better served by synthetic oil in a wider viscosity band. I put 0-40 or 5-40 in all the alloy cylinder cars.

I was not one who jumped on the synthetic oil band wagon because it was new and high tech. It took 20 years to convince me they have a place and do it better than dinosaur oil in that place.

I always thought that the factory recommended viscosity was based on the bearing clearances

Factory recommended viscosity was based on the best, or Ferrari sponsor best, oil technology available at the time the recommendation was printed. Bearing clearances, oil pressure, pounding loads, cold starts, etc were ingoing arguments

I’ve been getting good results with Redline Oil which has a minimum of 2,200 ppm of Zinc and phosphorus to resist components wear and also contains molybdenum to resist wear, oxidation, and corrosion.
