Ya lost me lol. How does the car all of a sudden become rich or lean without any mods or tune?

We have no idea if it is rich or lean but that can happen. If you have a failed warm up regulator, Bosch protection relay, fuel distributor, vacuum leak, bad starting injector....how long do I need to go on? Point is the term rich and lean keeps getting used and that is not what overheats a cat, Hydrocarbons do and that is independent of fuel mixture.

If the light is not illuminating for a few seconds when you turn on the ignition, per the owners manual, then, by definition, the system isn't working.

Well i think i may actually have a misfire issue now.. took it out again... and while on the highway around 80 my throttle pressure remained the same but i can feel the car lunging a bit or rather not providing consistency in power to throttle pressure...the worry is it just had its major service done 3 months ago... so it had new plugs, wires, distributers. Everything.... hmmm i guess ill start looking at the plugs and go from there.... what is the spark plug gap for our car

I will also add it seemed struggling to turn over upon ignition of the car. Turn the key and it just chugs... after a second or 2 it doesn’t “fire up” it just kind of slowly rolls on...

That (maybe losing a bank of ignition) is more consistent with actually overheating a cat.

This can also be a symptom of it starting up on one bank only.

Even though it was just worked on that doesn't mean things can't go wrong. 2 easy things to do first are:

    1. Just remove the dist caps and look for obvious problems (contaminated inside with engine oil, broken rotor, etc.)

    2. Also, wouldn't hurt to make sure you have the best (more reliable) distributor rotors installed 124288 -- they should look like the middle one in this photo -- white with the widest tip end:

I second this. Mine was serviced, just out for a group drive and the slowdown lights would come on at speed. Slow down & they'd go off. Wash, rinse, repeat.
We pulled over & popped the cap(s)...oil in the cap from a leaking cam seal. Limped home & replaced the seals

It controls how much air bypasses the throttle butterfly during warmup. Provides faster idle when reservoir is cool then cuts off the excess air when coolant warms up.

So it shouldn’t have any added use during regular driving?

Right, it closes off when engine warms. That silver part next to your hand has a hole drilled through it. There is a disk with a hole in it that matches up with the hole in the housing when coolant is cold. As the coolant warms the disk rotates closing off the passage and shutting off the excess air.
