The Senna Alesi race was quite cold for Phoenix and overcast I remember. The race was in one of the run down areas of downtown at the time and was just ugly concrete barriers, cheap banners, and quicky temporary stands.

It was not well attended I remember.

Sorry but no one says "hey, I want to go to Austin for a holiday. I really want to see the sights." In fact I bet most Americans couldn't find it on a map.

OTOH, for non Americans, it sucks. No direct flights, which made travel a real drag, and frankly not much else to see there, compared to the other “world class “ cities on the tour.
Not panning it, we stayed the full week there, enjoyed it, met some lovely people, but it was easy to run out of unique things to do, other than golf....so in the future, I don’t really have a reason to ever go back.

If a GP happens in Miami it will be called the "Birdcage Grand Prix" with a hard "x".

With Miami, it's to the point now that I seriously doubt it will actually happen and am rapidly
    losing interest.

If you guys want to see a world class automotive event in Miami, come to the Miami Concours
Presented by Chopard February 14-16. The event will include the new element of a track day
at the brand new Concours Club and the now famous red carpet covered streets of the Design
District where the hand picked cars will be on display.

To be fair, the new maps looks to make a decent effort of making a race track out of a 'street circuit' They will be cutting new roads through the grass and asphalt parking lots. IF they do it right I can see a possibility of moving the barriers a decent distance back from the track limits so it's not a concrete and wire mesh canyon. Not saying it's good, just saying it could be much worse.

Sorry, I need to disagree here. Austin is a well known and liked city as a destination on it's own. It's got a great food and music culture, plus it's the state capital and has a fun reputation for being 'wired'. In a relatively conservative state it stands out as an odd ball in that it's very liberal, and that in it's own right is a very Texas thing. It shows a streak of Independence compared to the rest of the State, just like Texas likes to claim it's different to the rest of the country.

I've been there three times, once as a family vacation pre GP. Once to see the GP and once to visit friends and a wedding. Note, we didn't know anyone down there when we first went on vacation. Whenever I mention I've been to Austin, people always chime in 'that's cool, I want to go and see...', 'Awesome, I've been/want to go to.....(insert music festival) etc. In fact I know more people who have been to, or want to go to, Austin than all other destination in Texas locations combined. Additionally it's name frequently pops up on 'best cities to live in the USA' or 'best places to visit' etc.

All in all it's a great location for an F1 race and it's arguably one of, if not the best of the modern 'Tilke' circuits and a great place to spectate even in general admission. Personally I hope it remains on the calendar for a long time, and this from someone who has to travel from Michigan to spectate.

For what it's worth that new layout is verrry interesting (note that it is anti clockwise). The bottom left loop is very technical and will require excellent balance and comittment. The track is however all about the back straight (at the top). That has been designed so that there is zero loss of downforce before it as it is preceded by several very slow bits so ideal set up to favor overtaking at the end of the straight. Traffic will be an issue in those few slow corners though.

They are not telling how long, how many kilometers this is, I hope it is not too small and that there is all the room needed. That being said it makes me think of Vegas, the Ceasar's Palace disaster because it is a parking lot to start with...let's hope they make the most of it if it happens but in any case this is leaps and bounds better than what they initially proposed.

The problem is they would have no room for public parking: looking at the property on Google earth this would take up almost the entire surface if you count space for the paddock and grandstands..so they would need alost 100% remote parking...where? In the Everglades?

I was there, in the first chicane with an FIA guest pass so I saw the Alesi Senna duel first hand:) It was not very warm in fact at the motel I was the only one in the pool in the evenings except a lady and her kids. She asked where I was from to brave the cold and I answered Sweden. I asked where she was from and she said...Alaska LOL.

The city center was taken up by the race but it was a concrete and wire fence jungle with zero atmosphere. The best view of the track, onto the only fast curve, was from the local jail....

" The crucial vote about the zonage rights for the Hard Rock Stadium has been delayed until February 19th. Commissioner Barbara Jordan invoked a “four day rule” to delay the vote further. The vote is to decide whether “auto racing” is a permitted use for the stadium. "

Miami Gardens is a dump as is that track layout. Although it doesn't have the glamour of Miami, Daytona is setup way better with their speedway. The F1 cars had no problem on the high oval banking when Ferrari did Corse Clienti there in 2016.

The big question for me with regard to this layout centers around storm water control. As we all know, there can be heavy rain events there, and the paved areas around the stadium complex were carefully designed to control and direct storm water runoff. In order to make a viable racing surface the track would need to be completely re-profiled and repaved, and would likely be a compromise...neither a great parking lot nor a great racing circuit.

    Update

"The crucial zoning vote in Miami today has resulted in a tie amongst county commissioners, ie. unsuccessful from the protestors. This means the major hurdle facing the MiamiGP has been cleared. The Hard Rock Stadium retains auto racing as an authorised use."

"This isn't over yet - Miami Gardens homeowners confirm that they have filed a lawsuit against the Grand Prix. Details on this soon."

Well they might want to study how F1 downforce interacts with a hurricane:D

I still don't understand where spectators will park their cars since the proposed track layout and paddock use every inch of the property and whether they have even discussed the need for a temporary heliport. I bet the average local resident opposing the GP is not even aware that is a given...

They already have a multipad heliport on the north side of the stadium. There is plenty of parking at Calder Casino and Opa Locka Airport.

Miami Grand Prix ‘five to ten years away’

    https://www.planetf1.com/news/miami-grand-prix-2/

    https://www.motorsport-total.com/formel-1/news/chase-carey-gibt-nicht-auf-miami-grand-prix-in-fuenf-bis-zehn-jahren-20022301

Chase Carey downplayed delays in the proposed Miami Grand Prix of Formula 1. However, he tells Motorsport-Total.com that he is "frustrated by the increasing complexity".

The Formula 1 boss also says that the "Project USA" is a long-term one and that a time frame of five to ten years is now being targeted. "We knew that it would take time in the US," said the 66-year-old.

"On the other hand, you have to say that it takes longer than we hoped. It is frustrating because we have invested a lot of time, but there seems to be increasing complexity."

"I think we have to get to grips with the reality that it is a time frame of more than five years. The goal is now a race in the next five to ten years from today. Within this frame there are twelve months [delay] not a big deal, but that doesn't mean it's getting increasingly frustrating. "

    Resistance from various interest groups
When asked about the next steps for the planned race, he replied: "There seem to be a few changes in the course of the political process that we have to get under control. All of this still has to be balanced."

In the end, the project was able to win against the local opposition. The district commission voted on Wednesday whether the Miami Dolphins grounds could also be used for car racing. The vote ended in a draw (6: 6).

Dolphins owners can now continue with plans to build a racetrack on the stadium grounds,
where the Super Bowl was held for the sixth time earlier this month. After a meeting, a number of concessions were made to local residents, the mayor says.

These concessions also included the removal of a section of the route for which the use of a public road was planned. Assurances were also made regarding noise pollution and no Formula 1 activities during school hours or at night.

"We are happy to leave this long delayed vote behind us so we can start with the multi-million dollar private investment," said Miami Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel.

The residents do not want to give up so quickly. Local representative for Miami Gardens, Barbara Jordan, who has successfully led a campaign against the race, promises to continue fighting the event.

According to media reports, the residents want to take legal action against the Miami Dolphins and Formula 1 to prevent the Grand Prix.

I say either Las Vegas or a return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The latter is all set and ready to go.
