I now it's unlikely I will get a referral from here but you never know. Starting to collect and the 86 CR250 was my first new one. I used to race.

If your goal is to collect then either one would have the same collectors value which is the same as market value. That said the 500 is probably a tad more exotic. Nothing wrong with the 250, splitting hairs really.

Ktm is the way to go if you’re gonna ride it.

Those Honda’s are around. The KX 500’s also have a following. Good luck with your search. (Most of the 2-stroke open class bikes are pulling sand duty, around here.)

I think that time period you are taking about was when Honda had that orange red color. Those were the best looking bikes ever between that and the look of the early liquid cooled radiator shrouds.

I found a 87 CR500. It needs some work but overall in pretty good shape. I'll get a pic soon. I ride a 2003 CR 250 at the local track. I will ride the 500 a bit also but it's mostly to collect. 500s are beasts.

I bought a 77 CR125 a few months ago as well. Pics to come.

I’ve always wanted to pick up that exact bike. My father bought an 87 cr 500 new and raced it a couple years. I guess he would have been 28 years old at the time..

My favourite bikes of all time are 86/87 CRs. I too am seeking a good one to restore. Old Japanese MX bikes are not cheap restoration projects, which leaves the question, what will you do with it when it is finished? Ride it? Unlike gently riding an old street bike to coffee or driving a vintage car, your CR will not be attractive for very long.

I had a 76 125 and 250. Loved the 125, but I bought it in 81 and it was pretty out of date by then.
Lots of fun, but that poor clutch took lots of abuse to keep it on the pipe.
Riding a Beta 200 these days.
