How far behind were the 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000 cars behind the Williams and McLaren for 1997, and the McLaren for 1998, 1999, and 2000? Were the cars from 1997 to 1999 basically midfielder cars, with the 2000 car being slightly slower than the McLaren by maybe 0.1 to 0.2 second when driven by anyone other than Schumacher? Was the 2001 F2001 car basically the first car that was equal with the top cars for the season like Williams and McLaren?

given the upheaval in the team after Barnard left (he laid down the concept of the car) Rory Byrne developed the car within 3 years to win the WCC. No mean feat so in my opinion all of them were good, which goes to show all you need is a good concept and evolution (rule changes aside)

The F310 was anywhere from 8 tenths to 2 seconds a LAP slower.

The 310B improved matters somewhat but it was still around 5 tenths to 1.5 seconds slower.

The F399 was much closer to the Mclaren, marginally slower to a few tenths difference at worst. This is the first true challenger Ferrari build. Sadly due to Schumachers legs breaking this title wasn't meant to be.

The 2000 Mclaren was very good and was lost to Ferrari due to Schumacher being the superior driver.

    The F2001 was the benchmark.
