What is a good first watch for someone who knows very little about watches but wants to blow $10k-$20k?

If a sport watch, the Rolex Submariner in stainless.

If a dress watch, the A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1.

The "fun" for a lot of us is researching, shopping and developing opinions about what we like and do not like. There is a huge range of cool watches out there. What needs study is differentiating between heavily marketed fashion watches and true masterpieces. Add used classic watches and there is even more choice.

You don't provide your location in your profile. If you are near a big city, there will be a few great wristwatch shops which are a great way to get into it. Just browse and talk. The first phase is total confusion by overwhelming choice!

Classic and for myself, my first "real" watch. Wearing it today in fact.

You can get a like new depreciated Vacheron Constantin Overseas like in plastique999 pics above in that price range.
Classy AND sporty and one of "The Big Three" means it will never go out of style.
I would not buy a fad watch.

Also am a fan of Blancpain 50 fathoms.

Rolex always a safe but common choice.
    Everyone knows Rolex.
    Thats good and bad.

So cliche but first watch, go for a Rolex. They hold value the best and a stainless steel Rolex is the basis of a collection.
